What's Your Favourite Ale?

I couldn’t choose a favourite- too difficult- but on New Years Eve I discovered Robinson’s Old Tom. Old news to most people I’m sure but news to me. Incredibly malty, and dangerously drinkable considering it’s 8.5%. I’ll be tracking down more of that.

We’re not too far from the Robinson’s Brewery. Old Tom really is a legend already!

cor, blimet. old tom, know your talking. its been in spoonies a few times. trouble is they just cannot pour the stuff right- makes me shudder just to watch em!

I think you should have a look at my review on Ulverston Brewery Company.

their website tells you where you can sup their wonderful ales. it is www.ulverstonbrewerycompany.co.uk, but please check my review as well. I’m afraid that I did a bit of cut and pasteing. my appologies.

have you heard of “Another fine mess” or “Ollie Stout”

They haven’t made it here yet. I’ll look out for them. There is an excellent pub 5 mins walk from us called The Albion which is atarting to brew its own beers in the next month or so. They are an official oasis for “Sons of the Desert” - the only one in quite a large area!
Last night, they had a local brew on called Dunham Massey Porter; under 6% but tasting more like 8! Almost a meal in a glass!
addition: The Albion have had both beers you mentioned plus some others from the same brewery! Very tasty!

Got to be Dark Island - Orkney Brewery….fabulous dark ale. Another advantage to living in the West Highlands of Scotland

  • 1 Mai 2009

We’ve got one on now! Wickwar Station Porter! If you like dark ales, this is a must! Tastes of malt, licquorice, blackberries and…..port! and it’s 6.1 but tastes like about 4%! Very dangerous! We’re only a tiny pub, but a firkin lasted two and a half days!

i must admit to liking the old speckled hen- not many pubs around here stock it, thats the problem

  • 10 Juni 2009

DW - We have Speckled Hen quite often, alternating with Courage Directors usually. A lot of customers won’t buy it since they dropped the abv, but I think it’s better as you can drink it as a session beer now, as opposed to falling over all the time if you had more than four or five!

  • 12 Juni 2009

Same here- i would rather drink a low strength beer, as you say you can have a session on them. There is a micro brewery near me called Zero Degrees- they do a wheat beer that recently doubled in strength and as a result people went off of it, including me. The manager has since gone back to the original strength (about 4- 4.5%)
