Save this historic community pub in Cardiff from demolition! The Vulcan was opened in 1853 and is still going strong to-day as a traditional and friendly working-class pub, serving real ale. But... Developers plan to demolish it in 2009 for a shiny 'modern' high rise development. Locals say the development could be amended to retain the pub. I agree that the developers in CF are in danger of establishing Cardiff as a soul-less place > the Bay area for example is good but there is something missing: character & life!
I am against this new building - and I would love to help saving “The Vulcan”. Long may it live. SAVE the good “olde” British pubs - you do not get them anywhere else! All for The Vulcan. If action is required I will be there.

What they are doing to Cardiff is tragic. It used to be well known as having survived the worst of the ‘redevelopment mania’ in the 1960s and 1970s, and much of its Victorian architecture survived intact. (Although they did knock down the remains of the mediaeval Greyfriars Priory to widen what is now Kingsway in the 1950s). But the latest developments are destroying its skyline with really cheap looking tower blocks.
The most immediate thing is to sign the online petition and encourage others to do so. Leave a comment if you like. (The site asks for a donation, but you do not have to do this).

Really good news. The “Save The Vulcan” campaign recently learnt that their hard work (and their supporters) has led to owner and would-be developer Rapport to offer a new three-year lease to The Vulcan. There’s still work to do in order to secure the long-term future of this great pub but for the next few years it is safe.
Thanks to all who signed their on-line petition.
