Lost Society - Clapham
697 Wandsworth Road, Clapham, London SW8 3JX
20.11.2007
Lost Society is one of my favourite bars in London. Actually, it's one of my favourite bars full stop. I think this place is so tastefully decorated, and the attention to detail is fabulous, from the wall paper to the chandeliers to the mirrors, seating and even the bird cages for something different. I love the look of this place, and the atmosphere is great too. There is a lovely outdoors area as well and the music is so funky and non main stream. It is a little small and it does get extremely packed, but this is one bar in which I don't mind that at all! The place is classy (so the drinks are a little pricy) you can have a lovely meal here too, and there are plenty of nooks to have a cosy seat to hide out with your group of friends. I can't speak more highly of this place, and I even like the fact that it's a little smaller than other places as it gives it an exclusive feel. Besides, it's not a bad night when you get squashed up to some of the other Lost Society fans! Yum yum
Electric Ballroom - Camden
184 Camden High Street, Camden Town, London NW1 8NH
19.11.2007
Electric Ballroom was recommended to me by a friend as "the place to go" for a night out. And I totally agree. It's a HUGE venue, and considering it's in the heart of Camden town, you get quite a mix of people, which I always enjoy. There is an r'n'b room, a massive open area downstairs and a balcony above this where you can watch people dance their hearts out! This is the most fun at the end of the night when the cheesy tunes come on (Greese lightning medley hilarious). The drinks arn't too expensive and you can run a riot in here with a big bunch of friends. Perfect for a good night out, with small or large groups who like mixed music and a relaxed environment where you can dress up or down until your heart's content!
International Convention Centre (ICC) - Birmingham
Broad Street, Birmingham, West Midlands B1 2EA
19.11.2007
I saw Harry Connick Jr last night at the Birmingham International Convention Centre. It was a fabulous night, and he was so fantastic, talented and charismatic, but the ICC was a perfect venue for the event. Harry was on stage with approximately 12 other extremely talented musicians and the show just seemed so intimate. The theatre was plush, the stage was a good size (not too big, not too small) and the seating was comfortable and spacious. There is a cafe that serves hot and cold meals, snacks, alcoholic beverages and sweets just in case you're running too late for a meal before the show. The inside of the centre felt a little like a hospital, but the theatre room certainly made up for it. I believe the ICC is a good place for intimate concerts, as I totally forgot my surroundings and was immersed in the music and singing - which to me means I was comfortable and well seated enough that I could totally release and enjoy!
Ruby Blue - Leicester Square
Queens House Leicester Place, London WC2H 7BP
19.11.2007
In a little part of busy Leicester Square, a little bar is pumping, and full to capacity. I went there this weekend, and found the place to be quite small, or maybe it was just because it was jam packed! To be honest, I found the place quite standard with nothing special on offer. There is a few little VIP areas, one of them boasting an Arabyian themed room, and another little room off the dance floor overlooking the square, which was quite nice. But Ruby Blue did nothing much to excite my senses. The music was standard with a DJ annoyingly interrupting with his singing and wise (or so he thought) cracks over the music! The decore was nothing to boast about and with so many people inside you couldn't have a boogy, and the end of the main bar is not in service (it's the glassies domain) which caused confusion and frustration. It's in a great location which I think is very lucky for this bar, as it certainly doesn't stand out in my mind as anything special. And in such a great thriving city such as London, that has so many wonderous places and events on offer - you can't really afford to be second best!
Odeon Cinemas - Leicester Square
24-26 Leicester Square, London WC2H 7JY
16.11.2007
The Odeon is a huge movie theatre in the heart of Leicester square. Some very impressive, very large advertisements of the latest movies can be seen from a long way off, and there are some great typical movie foods available, and some not so typical. The only problem with a movie theatre this size and in such a fabulous location is that it's quite expensive. And personally I prefer a little movie theatre such as in Clapham Common without the huge crowds, and huge prices. Because at the end of the day, it's still the same movie.
David Theatre Royal - Covent Garden
CATHERINE STREET, London WC2B 5JF
15.11.2007
Brilliant! I enjoyed the whole movie (which I love as well) all over again, but this time in person. There were some great dance scenes with all the hobbits, and the oarks were brilliant and extremely talented with their acrobatics - ON STILTS - and there was an amazingly scary scene in which they came into the audience and frightened the life out of some blissfully unaware people. The staging and props were worth the money spent on the production, despite an actor unfortunately breaking his leg on the simulated moving stage. The performances were good, but it was Gollum and Galadrial who were outstanding. Gollum totally embodied the villian, and Galadrial had a star quality about her. I know they spent a lot of money on this production, but I believe it was totally worth it!
The New Ambassadors Theatre - Covent Garden
West Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9ND
15.11.2007
Stomp is an amazing creation of a million layers of rhythm, percussion, complicated timing, amazing raw sets and props and way more than just tap dancing. These dancers are also athletes in this very long and vigirous performance, and amazing artists with their grasp of intricate beats and sounds made by their bodies and random objects.
I am a huge fan of tap dancing, and was extremely keen to see this show, but was literally blown away. There was audience interaction and humour within the script despite there being no talking or singing (somebody sign me up now!) and throughout the entire performance I was on the edge of my seat wishing I was on stage.
It is quite a long performance, but I was kept interested throughout as they came up with such amazing concepts and ways to produce sound out of ordinary objects.
The end is a climax as they hang from the ceiling and still tap in mid air.
Brilliant. Then again, I love this dance form, but Stomp certainly impressed me!
We Will Rock You - Bloomsbury
268-269 Dominion Theatre, 268-269 Tottenham Court Road, London W1T 7AQ
15.11.2007
I love musicals, and have a much bigger appreciation of the phenomenon that was the HUGELY talented and successful Queen. This musical has a brilliant 3D sign on top of the theatre that glitters in the wind and light and is looming on top of you as you exit the Tottenham Court Road tube station.
The Dominion Theatre itself is lovely and grand and the stage is visual from all seats (no nasty columns in your way).
The performance was funny, well written and well performed but it was the individual singing that really affected me. I honestly don't know how some people become so amazing at singing. These performers (especially the main characters) must have vocal chords worth their weight in gold! The two main characters (Gallilao and "Scary bush") were absolutely amazing, but were equalled by at least three of the main supporting cast.
What a powerful performance.
What a treat! I'd recommend We Will Rock You! I left extremely pumped up! The Rocked me!
britgirly Can’t wait to see “We will rock you” in July - getting even more curios by your review :-)

The Lion King Musical - Covent Garden
21 Wellington Street, Lyceum Theatre, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7RQ
15.11.2007
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! I have wanted to see this musical for a good few years, as one of my ex high school teachers said they saw it in London and it was not to be missed. It had played in Theatres in Australia, but as I knew I was coming to London, I wanted the full impact of this show, and I'm thrilled I got off my butt to book tickets. Not a penny wasted!
The opening scene made me cry (what a sap!) but the costumes where honestly overwhelming, and I would be lying to you if I said the Disney movie wasn't one of my favourites! The set, props, and costumes were pure geneius, the performances fantastic (Rafiki was outstanding, absolutely amazing!) and the soundtrack true to the movie. Pumba was extremely similar to the cartoon character and I couldn't rave more about this production.
Definately one you must see!
Fabulous
Sandown Park Racecourse Stables - Esher
Sandown Park, Portsmouth Road, Esher, Surrey KT10 9AJ
15.11.2007
I went to the Sandown races this year on a gloriously hot day in Esher. As I'm an antipodean, and the Melbourne Cup Carnival is usually in one of our hotter months in Australia, I felt right at home in a lovely breezy dress and hat. The course itself was great - although I usually go to any race event for the event of the event, not the racing. To me it's a day where we can all dress up, enjoy the sights of men in suits (always a pleasure) and get a little bit tipsy at a time usually reserved for work hours.
It was the beautiful view that made me write this review about something I'm not all that interested in. It was a great way to experience racing at the opposite end of the world (to me) and have a change of scenery. The same old things happened there of course, nothing much changed from my experiences at my home race course. Yet the Sandown race course was a great day out with some surprisingly fine weather and a spectacular view!
