This cafe has a balcony overlooking the extremely bustling, trendy shopping street of Kensington Gardens in the North Laines. It can be hard to get a balcony seat, but inside there are big wooden tables and benches and plenty of space (though it’s full at lunch time). There is a huge choice of very good food, my favourite being the refried beans and guacamole with enchilladas. Like most cafes in Brighton, it caters extremely well for vegetarians, with fry-ups as well as healthy stuff and fake meat with the breakfasts. It does a sort of breakfast bap, with all the breakfast stuffed into it, which is pretty full on as it’s huge, but very good indeed. The only thing lacking is a toilet - you have to go downstairs and into a separate shop that is attached, and downstairs in that. But at least there is one, it’s just a hassle to get to.

My favourite cafe, not far from the station in the North Laines so you can rush there straight away when you get off the train if you’re a Londoner like me, and use it as a base for your shopping or a meeting spot. Brilliant for vegetarians because it even does a vegetarian BLT with fake bacon slices, and has hash browns (very important) with its breakfasts. The food is really, truly good, the only problem being it is hard to choose what to have because it is all so good. There is a choice of healthiness - mixed salads, flans, fresh juices and smoothies - or fry ups and (veggie and meat) burgers, as well as sandwiches and cakes. The staff are incredibly laid back and friendly, the place bright and colourful, crowded at lunch time but otherwise an ideal place for lingering. There is a noticeboard for local events, classes, flat and room rents, news of local politics and items for sale, so you can read those while you eat. Outside is a lovely little yard to sit in when its sunny, with a sort of shed with toilets in it, and a kiwi tree growing up the back wall with real, edible kiwis hanging down (though I’d ask the staff before you try to pick them!)
They also do a bowl of hot chocolate - a large, bowl-sized cup!
