Suley's cafe - East Grinstead

22 Railway approach, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 3

18.02.2013 (aktualisiert am 27.04.2013)

We're a couple on a tight budget and Suley's is right down our street. Both in location and preference.

The service is very quick, Ideal if you're on a lunch break. The staff seem to value their customers opinion and always greet us and say thank you and good bye.

I've had a couple bad experiences, once there was a hair in my chips but was not charged for them, and we received a sincere sounding apology. Another time we gave our order and my order was actually forgotten. When we mentioned it they came over with a small portion and said it's on the house.

The prices are great, we end up spending about £6-7 for the both of us. I always pop in for a lovely cup of tea even if I'm not hungry. If only they were open longer hours!

-Increased rating as each time we go back the standard is still excellent. They get to know the regulars and it's such a great atmosphere!

Ripley's Believe It Or Not! - West End

The London Pavilion, London W1J 0DA

11.08.2012 (aktualisiert am 05.04.2013)

This has become a yearly tradition for my Fiancé and I, as it's where we went on our first 'official' date.

I was happy with the customer services "within 24 hours" response when we queried whether it was open on the Jubilee. We were given full information.

While I feel I generally enjoy the place, I've found more pedantic negatives than positives. Firstly, the location is convenient, slap bang in the centre of Piccadilly. I'm a fan of Karl Pilkington, so the "freaks" element amuses me anyway. I miss the crystal Mini Cooper, which has been replaced by a knitted Ferrari.

We bought a full ticket, but we decided to give the mirror maze and laser race a miss as we had headache from the noise. The woman at the entrance said there was a very long queue for the laser race anyway.

One of the biggest downsides for us was the lack of restaurant. While there are many places to eat in Central London, If you're really interested in the exhibits it takes a good while to walk around, and there is only a snack stop half way that sells overpriced confectionery and drinks.

From what we can remember, there is only a toilet on one floor, so you have to go while you can. The general admission for the place is quite a lot, considering you can simply view the exhibits online, but I guess you can get away with it in C. London.

I didn't like how the dungeon was compulsory, there's a room with a dummy man in a chair being electrocuted, and when someone pulls the switch he convulses in the chair screaming while smoke drifts from him. I didn't want to experience it, but someone found it amusing to switch it repeatedly. While it's interesting, It scared a 20 year old, so It'd scare a child (I wouldn't want to explain the purpose of chastity belts to a 4 year old). Plus the hissing of the pipes as you get to Vlad the Impaler's display made me jump, I was interested but moved on quicker as it was irritating.

Towards the end of the exhibits there is a rolling tunnel that takes your pictures. We take a picture each year of Andrew picking me up in a "honeymoon" pose. We waited our turn as a group of 8-12 years or so old kids were going through. However the mother was nowhere to be seen, and the children kept coming back through the tunnel again about 20 times!! This REALLY annoyed me, as by that age I had manners, AND they could see us waiting to take our picture. Furthermore you have to go through the tunnel to exit. Little tip - If someone is going through the tunnel before you don't stand directly behind at the end of the corridor, as your face will be in their photo!

After that is the photo booth where you can view and buy the image from the rolling tunnel. And because the children before us had gone through repeatedly, the images on screen didn't show ours for about 10 minutes! We actually sat and waited while who must have been the mother to the 4 children nattering away with her kids to the gent behind the desk. She didn't end up buying anything! Steer clear of viewing your images as you may be tempted to spend your months wages on a photo.

The overall experience, however IS worth it. We will continue to have our yearly visits as we also have our memories.

Sainsbury's is our local shop and we usually do our weeklies here, unless we order a Tesco delivery. It's conveniently located just next to the train station, so you can pop in if you need a snack before your train arrives.

We visited on a saturday for some snacks only to find the majority of the crisps shelves completely empty. (We also went for potato waffles, which they were also out of!) Upon asking what time they get stock in, they said not until Monday!

The same happened to me last week when I had the flu and wanted soup. Completely out of stock!

The Felbridge Hotel and Spa - East Grinstead

London Rd, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2BH

15.02.2013

I had a bit of an unfortunate stay at the Felbridge hotel. We had booked the overnight spa trip for £238.

We arrived at the hotel and upon entry we were greeted by a clean, well laid out reception and a smiley receptionist. We booked in and were given brief directions to our room, but we did have the offer of help with our bags, which I think is an improvement after reading some older reviews.

We got to our superior double room and couldn't see a thing, so we fumbled for the light switches, which did nothing. Then for the lamps, which also didn't switch on. My other half found the phone with the light from his mobile and phoned reception, who told us we need to put our room key in the slot near the door to switch on the electricity. It ruined our first impression of the room a tad that they forgot to tell us this when we checked in. We had a peek out the window to a terrible view of a huge hedge and some wood construction materials in an alleyway.

We did our room check and when opening the wardrobe we were horrified to find a grotty pair of socks on the shelf from a previous customer. I'm still haunted by the image now. I think the housekeeper was rather distracted when they got to our room as the bin was also full of coffee and empty packets, and a glob of hair.

We had massages booked for 4pm and we went down 20 mins early. We had robes and slippers with the room (My other half had one with a yellow stain on the shoulders/collar which made him uneasy) and were able to wear them down to the spa. We got there before quarter to and filled out the health forms. When we handed them in we were told to wait for the therapists. They arrived just after 4 and we were confused as to why they were introducing themselves to us individually, then we were incredibly disappointed to discover they don't have double massage rooms so we were in separate rooms. I was so miserable and really not relaxed, as we usually hold hands when we receive massages (I know, soppy fools). The therapist was a lovely lady, she was very calm and asked me if there were any specific points of tension. The actual massage was really painful (She said I was really knotted) and I wish I spoke up and said something as I felt quite a lot of pain the following day too.

Afterwards we went in to the pool area and relaxed in the jacuzzi for a while. It was a lovely layout in the pool area and the jacuzzi was larger than that of of other hotels.

I was rather disappointed to see that you only get 1 hour of free internet when you plug your laptop in on the room desk. I think it was £6 per hour after that.

The food menu and room service was a bit too posh for us, we're a bit of a McDonalds couple.

I genuinely take my hat off to the manager; Carl. He dealt with our complaints well particularly as after all of it plus back ache from the massage, I was rather upset. He offered us an alternative room should we decide to stay, and met us directly to personally apologise when we decided to go home. He refunded our money and called my Fiancé the day up to ensure we got home okay and were feeling better. Because of the service I find myself wanting to try and exaggerate the positive points of our stay, which is a change for me. The customer service we received during our short time is second to none, and is the reason for me leaving a more positive than usual review. I wouldn't discourage anyone visiting the hotel, as I know our negative experiences are rare. And we'll most likely be back for the £15 a day spa passes!

The Kings Hotel - Brighton

139-141 Kings Road, Brighton BN1 2NA

06.12.2012 (aktualisiert am 28.12.2012)

My Fiancé booked us in for 4 nights for my 21st birthday late November. For the price we paid, we weren't impressed. We stayed in a Deluxe double sea view room.

We arrived on the 27th to see the bar was being re-furbished from the 27th - 30th! That was our entire holiday!! We were given the wifi password but there was no signal the whole time we were in the hotel!

I always check around the room when I arrive, and I was disappointed to see there was no Bible. I have never been to a hotel or B&B without a bible. there were numerous stains here and there, and peeling wallpaper (They had also painted over previous wallpaper instead of scraping off first). There were feather down cushions on the bed. A lot of people are allergic, I simply hate being poked with the feathers that fall out. We put them in the wardrobe and the maid kept putting them back on so we had to leave a note.

We also noticed rather early on that when someone walks around the room or above us, the room shakes a bit. Neither of us are overweight. This got particularly annoying at about midnight, when the people above us were stamping around constantly like there were lots of children. It went on for so long we had to phone reception to ask that they are more considerate. After all I wanted to get some sleep for my birthday the next morning!

We had to go out and buy our own tea and milk as the little milk pots are WHOLE milk, and there is no decaf tea. We also wished to swap our biscuits but they didn't have any others, so we just had to throw away the horrible raisin ones we had.

There are no toiletries in the bathroom except shower gel (We have baths instead of showers) and a liquid soap that is fixed far too high up on the wall, which was only half full and watered down. I was expecting a bar of soap.

The chair with the dressing table I found quite painful. I couldn't sit in it for more than 5 minutes as the springs stuck too far out in the centre.

The windows were not double glazed. This is awful in winter, and for light sleepers. Particularly in Brighton, where there isn't enough time to fall asleep between sirens.

One of the biggest negatives for me is there are no plugs near the bed. You have to plug in your phone or laptop across the other sides of the room. The cable doesn't reach the bedside table!

I read in previous reviews they were fixing the lift. They can't have done a very good job, as it takes a couple of minutes for the doors to open by the time it's reached your floor. It's not a trustworthy piece of machinery and they should probably look into it again.

The bath, however is lovely. It is full length and it's nice to be able to re-fill the hot water without worrying about a meter. When I went to dry my hair on the other hand, there was a struggle. You have to hold down the button on the hairdryer! This is alright for some, but my hair almost reaches my backside so it takes a long time to dry my hair, and your thumb starts to ache.

Another important negative is that there is no room service. Not only no room service, there is no food served in the hotel at all!! They do a selection of about 5 sandwiches, so I went to ask whether they have cheese, and they said no! Apparently it's whatever the chef makes early morning is what they have in stock... Even a Travelodge is better in the fact that there's a menu in the room.

We had a lot of fuss with breakfast. Before our stay, my other half had it booked for all the days. However, we realised we'd most likely want to eat out some of the time, so we called to ask whether we are able to cancel on actual the day if we decide to eat out instead. The woman said she will cancel it, but make a note on our details that if we decide we would like it, that we will pay the standard £6 for the both of us. We decided to stay in on the final day, However we were not on the list, and they were expecting us to pay £10 for a bit of toast!!

My other half paid almost (With £50 roses and £50 champagne) £500 for this hotel. We could have had somewhere closer to the pier, somewhere with a restaurant, or somewhere with wifi. We were paying this price purely for a full length bath and view of the Wreck!

wetherspoons - Brighton

20-22a West Street, The Bright Helm, Brighton BN12RE

18.12.2012

It was a fairly average Wetherspoons, the chips were nicely cooked.

One of the days we decided to go for breakfast and it was quite full. The upstairs doesn't seem to open until later, so we had a terrible table in the middle of drunk smelly men and atable with flies round it.

The butter was rock solid and a member of staff offered to get more and try to melt it a bit, she even brought out fresh toast. I thought this was very kind, as I hadn't even kicked up a fuss.

One thing that was irritating was it had taken a long time to order as we had members vouchers. The staff had to find the manager to confirm they were real, but the manager had not seen them before!

This is the main taxi service my Fiancé and I use. 90% of the time, it's been alright service. A few times it's been late, or THEY'VE been early and charged US for it.

We have one particular driver that's our favourite, an Irish man. He's great. Whenever my Fiancé gets a lift somewhere and I'm not around, he always asks how I am too! Always very nice when the driver is polite and enjoys chatting.

However more recently there's been a new woman that answers the phone. She is very rude! When you explain where you're going (One time I said Jubilee Community Centre) she says "What, on -so and so- road?" And she says "I'll send it now" and hangs up the phone! No thank you or goodbye, and she hangs up while you're still talking.
