The Eagle Inn - Wanstead

73 Hollybush Hill, Snaresbrook, London E11 1PE

01.09.2008

Originally called the Spread Eagle, this was an 18th century coaching inn on the London to Newmarket road, now known as the Eagle and owned by the Toby carvery chain, the pub serves a mean roast and to my surprise curry alongside the ample vegetables on offer. The selection of meats is good and the refresh rate is great due to the popularity of the restaurant. I have tried most of the local competition and this is one of my favourites for a good value easy feast. I must admit to being initially shocked at the addition of the curry (I presume to add to the variety) but after watching my 12 year tucking in with out hesitation I just had to have a little taste. You have not lived until you pile your plate with a fine carvery alongside a lamb bhuna and rice!!!!

My conclusion is that I am yet to find a pub chain that does a good curry, interesting that it is an option but I doubt if people will flock for the Asian cuisine. As for the roast, well keep up the good work, the vegetable selection was great and well cooked with the “al dente” bite I like, definitely gets a re-visit from me.

Final thought: Eagle Pond, nearby, takes its name from this pub and is located 5 min walk up Snaresbrook Road take some bread to feed the ducks you’ll need the walk after your feast.

Thorpe Park - Chertsey

Thorpe Park Staines Road, Staines Road, Chertsey, Surrey KT16 8PN

I only have two things to say about this theme park. Pay the extra money to go Pole Position on Stealth and take a change of cloths.

Chongs Restaurant - Chingford

170 Station Road, Chingford, London E4 6AN

25.03.2008

Chong’s has been around for years, the place is normally a buzz with people and the food is excellent. They offer an above average selection of all you can eat menu with good variety of vegetarian choices. Drinks are expensive but the food makes up for that. Decor could do with a revamp but when busy you will not notice. If you love Chinese definitely worth more than one visit.

Highams Park - Woodford Green

Tamworth Avenue, London IG8 9RF

18.03.2008

I have lived in Highams Park for the last ten years and known this area for the last 40 so write with a bias which comes from growing up in this neck of the woods. The entrance to the park is in Woodford Green but the park itself is in London E4. If you find yourself searching for a peaceful meander there can be not better place than to take a stroll over Highams Park. There are few facilities (a small childrens play area) just the remains of the grounds of an old manor house including the lake which is and excellent place to take the kids to feed the ducks and climb the trees. The house has long gone but the forest at Highams Park contains a boating lake formed by Humphry Repton after damming the River Ching. During WWII the grounds were converted to prefab housing and still upon close examination the remains of paths and roads can be seen. The park and lake sit on the endge of some woods which are a pleasure to stroll through. Situated around the lake are some stones said to have been salvaged from the stones left over from the dismantaling of the original London Bridge. Anybody looking to find a peaceful part of our great capital city should pack up some bread for the swans, geese and ducks and head to Highams Park.
