The Harp - Covent Garden

47 Chandos Place, Charing Cross, London WC2N 4DD

24.02.2010

An amazing pub which counts as my favorite near work local. The staff is great and the pub itself is definitely interesting. It gets rather packed inside, but aside from when its pouring out, this isn't a problem because of the front and alley/street behind. It also features great sausages.

Grand Indian 2 - Embankment

31A Villiers Street, Charing Cross, London WC2N 6ND

25.11.2009

The Grand Indian was a dining option only because of location and after going there, it won't ever be again. The food, I will say, was decent. With the standard array of Indian fare available, I found my meal to be average, with little to complain or rave about.

The service on the other hand, was single handedly the worst that I've ever experienced. The waiter seemed decidedly standoff-ish, bringing the entire dinner into some humorously awkward dance of a grizzled and angry waiter and a affable manager attempting smooth his interactions over. The other diners in the restaurant (and there weren't many) all mentioned to us at some point how bad the waitstaff was, leaving the unanimous opinion of all the present customers at "never coming again".

The bottom line is that if you want tepid indian food and a horrible dining experience for slightly too much money, try this place. I'm just glad I never saw the toilets.

Benito's hat - Fitzrovia

56 Goodge Street, Fitzrovia, London W1T 4NB

10.09.2008

After just discovering this place yesterday, I was incredibly pleased with my lunch there. The soft tacos with steak and guacamole were amazing and I thought the nachos were some of the best I’ve had since leaving the Southern US (a much better location for Mexican food).

Overall, I thought that for a 6 pound mexican meal in Central London, it might be the best option. I still prefer Wahacca in Covent Garden for a proper Mexican dinner, but for lunch, this place is an amazing option.

Deliverance - Westminster

Multiple Sites, London

09.09.2008

Deliverance may be the delivery company I order from on the most regular basis, however, that doesn’t mean I love everything about them. While their delivery is quick and polite, I don’t like everything on their menu.

What they do well, they do really well. Their organic cheese burger was delivered quickly, tasted fresh and was definitely worth the money. The sticky rice, garlic bread and egg rolls are also really worth it.

Like other reviews have said, while the delivery part of their operation works rather well, some of the food just isn’t that amazing. The pizzas I’ve tried have been sub par, with a base consistency that just doesn’t work, while the Thai beef was so slathered in sauce and still seemed dry.

Overall, its a good option if you want a quick burger and a 2L of diet coke delivered, but for those that expect a gourmet delivery, look somewhere else.

Soho Revue Bar - Mayfair

Walkers Court, Piccadilly Circus, London W1B 4BR

06.06.2008

I was surprised by the size of the bar once entering, though I have a feeling this has less to do with the perceived size of the building and more to do with the alleyway you have to wait in line in.
The bar itself is cool and the place definitely had a nice atmosphere, however the layout isn’t really conducive to comfort, unless you want to fork over the money for a table. Myself and my group of friends found ourselves being jammed in the square upper bar area, partially out of necessity to the crowd and partially for the convenience it bestowed in quickly obtaining rounds.
The bar staff was very pleasant and provided quick and efficient service. I can’t really comment on the quality of the cocktails as I just had double vodka/red bulls. However, I can honestly say that these were made well, though that might be the most simple of bartending metrics.
I would recommend Soho Revue Bar if you’re in the area and want something a little different from the normal fare of the Picadilly Circus/Lower Soho area. If you’re looking to have a little more space and move around though, I’d have to say that you should keep looking.

Wax bar - Fitzrovia

4 Winsley Street, off 162 Oxford Street, London W1W 8HF

02.06.2008

After reading everyone’s opinions of Wax bar, I feel like I’ve found a completely different, yet identically named establishment.

After seeing the fliers for their Thursday night promotion, myself and several friends chose to go there over the alternatively suggested, yet constantly experienced idea of drinking in Covent Garden. After a brisk trip, I found that Wax Bar wasn’t just completely different than its flier, but also from anything representing an enjoyable or competent bar.

I normally appreciate all range of bars and feel that somewhere doesn’t have to be classy to have be a good time, however, some places just lack any semblance of a fun time….and Wax Bar is a perfect example.

The 2 pound cover on Thursday was definitely nice, however, the 10 minute wait for the door girl to learn how to open the register to retrieve change was not. Shrugging this aside, we wandered to a rather spacious downstairs area, the extra room to move granted not only from its large size, but also its lack of people.

The bar staff was equally as impressive as a 10 minute discussion on drink options yielded confusion on a level normally reserved for theoretical physics. I found this especially perplexing as I used to bartend for 5 years and feel that I can easily communicate my specific desire for something as simple as a 2 ingredient drink.

After these two sterling examples of the bar’s greatness, I feel I normally would have left, had I not suggested the place to the group I was with. Driven only by my flagging pride, we took up a booth on the side of the downstairs, suffered through a disco themed Thursday night (differentiation is one thing but a horrible idea is still a horrible idea) and finally gave up on Wax Bar an hour after we arrived.

Overall, I can say Wax Bar might be one of my worst bar experiences in London. Actually, I will say that, as my friends and I have now taken to using the phrase, “at least it’s not Wax Bar” to describe a variety of situations. To be concise in my dislike however, I feel the service and design is sub par and the atmosphere and crowd are non-existent.

El Burrito - Fitzrovia

5 Charlotte Place, London W1T 1SF

15.05.2008

After reading reviews on here about El Burrito, my need for Mexican food in London drove me to check it out. I have to say that I absolutely loved the beef tacos.
The place reminds me of a taco bar style chain back in the US called “Moe’s” which I wish would make it internationally, though I know it never will. This place improved on the feeling I got from Mexican restaurants such as that in the states by having a clean and quick atmosphere and some truly amazing food.
I would recommend going at an off-lunch time as I’ve managed to avoid the rush doing so, but the service has always been quick, so a line isn’t that bad.
While I wish they had ground beef as a filling option, something I can’t find most places around here, for a good taco I highly recommend this place.
After seeing someone else get the nachos and the burrito, I can’t wait to go back and try both, as they looked amazing as well.

Linus Yay, glad you liked it (would have felt a bit guilty if you’d hated it!)

City Pizza - Kings Cross

108 Pentonville Road, London N1 9JB

15.05.2008

I found City Pizza one day while stricken with a cold and trying to find a place that delivered Orange Juice and food. Oddly enough, City Pizza sells Orange Juice as well as some really good pizza.
I have odd tastes in pizza, I guess its from growing up in the states. Back home, I was used to Papa Johns and Domino’s as my delivery main stays. City Pizza doesn’t really follow the mold of those two places and I can say thats not necessarily a bad thing. My weird tastes in pizza have led me to try the thin crust with a combination of any or all of the above: extra cheese, sweet corn, pepperoni, onions, fresh garlic and spinach. I’ve found that almost all of the possible permutations have been good to great.
In addition to pizza, I’ve noticed they also do pasta, burgers and salads, though I haven’t tried any of those options yet.
The delivery is decently quick and though they had a little trouble finding my place, other delivery establishments have as well.
Overall, City Pizza isn’t the best pizza I’ve ever had, but for around a 10 pound meal delivered to my door, I do enjoy it.

The Gardening Club - Covent Garden

6/7 The Piazza, London WC2E 8BD

14.05.2008

After visiting the club on a Friday night with 4 friends (and paying a 12 pound cover), I thought it was nice, but not much more. The ambiance is pretty well established with a great color scheme and nice touches like a chandelier and comfy couches, however, the whole design of the place just doesn’t lend itself to a fun night out. The bar staff is nice, as is the security, however, the 2 bars are located in such a way that the que ranges from annoying to insufferable.

After finding some couches and alternating between hanging out and dancing, I had an averagely good time at the Gardening club, but honestly not much more. Its pros are its late hours, nice staff and decent environment. Its cons are a slightly higher than average cover, non-intuitive bar design and intangibles that other places in Covent just seem to execute slightly better.

I would recommend the place to others, but only after considering all the options in the area first.

Moonlighting Nightclub - Soho

16-17 Greek Street, London W1D 4DU

25.04.2008

Having only been to the club for their Cheap$kates Wed. night promotion (the 80p drinks and 1pound beers caught my eye), I can say that I have mixed feelings. The rules in the club (no gum, no drinks on the dancefloor, timed visits to the smoking area) are definitely a little weird and have no place in attempting to preserve whatever facilities the club aims to protect. The couches are a little nasty and the entire environment reminds me more of a strip club from Miami vice than a night club.
That being said, for somewhere hosting the type of event I went to, this is par for the course.
Overall, I don’t think I would return to Moonlighting aside from on a Wed., but for that night’s student promotion, I probably will.
Its a perfect case of getting what you pay for.
