After reading everyone’s opinions of Wax bar, I feel like I’ve found a completely different, yet identically named establishment.
After seeing the fliers for their Thursday night promotion, myself and several friends chose to go there over the alternatively suggested, yet constantly experienced idea of drinking in Covent Garden. After a brisk trip, I found that Wax Bar wasn’t just completely different than its flier, but also from anything representing an enjoyable or competent bar.
I normally appreciate all range of bars and feel that somewhere doesn’t have to be classy to have be a good time, however, some places just lack any semblance of a fun time….and Wax Bar is a perfect example.
The 2 pound cover on Thursday was definitely nice, however, the 10 minute wait for the door girl to learn how to open the register to retrieve change was not. Shrugging this aside, we wandered to a rather spacious downstairs area, the extra room to move granted not only from its large size, but also its lack of people.
The bar staff was equally as impressive as a 10 minute discussion on drink options yielded confusion on a level normally reserved for theoretical physics. I found this especially perplexing as I used to bartend for 5 years and feel that I can easily communicate my specific desire for something as simple as a 2 ingredient drink.
After these two sterling examples of the bar’s greatness, I feel I normally would have left, had I not suggested the place to the group I was with. Driven only by my flagging pride, we took up a booth on the side of the downstairs, suffered through a disco themed Thursday night (differentiation is one thing but a horrible idea is still a horrible idea) and finally gave up on Wax Bar an hour after we arrived.
Overall, I can say Wax Bar might be one of my worst bar experiences in London. Actually, I will say that, as my friends and I have now taken to using the phrase, “at least it’s not Wax Bar” to describe a variety of situations. To be concise in my dislike however, I feel the service and design is sub par and the atmosphere and crowd are non-existent.

Having only been to the club for their Cheap$kates Wed. night promotion (the 80p drinks and 1pound beers caught my eye), I can say that I have mixed feelings. The rules in the club (no gum, no drinks on the dancefloor, timed visits to the smoking area) are definitely a little weird and have no place in attempting to preserve whatever facilities the club aims to protect. The couches are a little nasty and the entire environment reminds me more of a strip club from Miami vice than a night club.
That being said, for somewhere hosting the type of event I went to, this is par for the course.
Overall, I don’t think I would return to Moonlighting aside from on a Wed., but for that night’s student promotion, I probably will.
Its a perfect case of getting what you pay for.
