Oxford University - Oxford

Catte Street, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 3BD

20.07.2008 (aktualisiert am 22.03.2010)

Oxford University...admire it or loathe it, it's undeniably famous and one of the main reasons people visit Oxford. It's inextricably tied up with the layout of Oxford: the magificent old buildings, the traditions, the culture and many of the inhabitants are related to the university and its spin-off education centres, shops and attractions.

It's the oldest university in the English-speaking world, dating back to the 11th century. In England its main rival is Cambridge, which was actually set up by some Oxford students in the 13th century. It remains one of the leading universities in the world for teaching and for research, and combines the old with the new.

Many people come to Oxford thinking there is one set area called 'Oxford University'. In fact, the university is a myriad of buildings, consisting mainly of colleges (there are around 30), which are semi-independent entities like schools with their own traditions, accommodation, libraries (especially the Bodleian) and teaching. There are also libraries, chapels, museums, music rooms and theatres, as well as administrative centres. Many of the buildings are really old, with amusing gargoyles on, towering steeples (Oxford is known as 'the city of dreamy spires') and are sites where great literary, political and scientific figures throughout history made various discoveries and creations.

Nowadays the university is more active than ever and it's worth popping along during term time to see students wearing their gowns (which some of them wear to dinner, and all to exams), academics in full academic dress on their way to various ceremonies, and to watch the rowing and punting, both of which Oxford is famous for. There are some famous students, such as the actress who plays Hermione in Harry Potter and Bilawal Bhutto, son of murdered Benazir Bhutto. Oxford students are stereotypically rich, public school educated and very intelligent. In reality, there is a good mix of people from different backgrounds, but there's still a high proportion of pashminas, chinos, V-neck jumpers and modern-day Einsteins.

Cotswold Lodge Hotel Bar & Restaurant - Oxford

66A Banbury Road, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 6JP

No te arrepentirás.

Radley - Oxford

50 Pingle Drive, Bicester Village, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX26 6WD

20.01.2009 (aktualisiert am 16.04.2009)

Every woman loves Radley bags. They’re fashionable yet cute, not too OTT and acceptable in pretty much every situation from nights out to work to mumsy day to day stuff. I must confess to being a bit of a bag addict and a complete sucker for the cute dog logo of Radley bags and purses. They’re quite pricey normally, but as with everything in Bicester, this retail outlet store can come up with some excellent bargains. There aren’t that many places in Oxford where you can find such a good collection of bags under one label, so it’s definitely worth making the most of it. The staff are friendly and the shop’s impeccably tidy.

Oxford Divinity School - Oxford

Broad Street, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 3BH

23.03.2009

The Divinity School is between the Bodleian library and the Sheldonian Theatre but is an impressive buiding in its own right. It was built in the 15th century (1426 - 1480) for theology students but today theology students have lectures in their halls of residence, their colleges and university lecture theatres. The building has served a variety of purposes over the years and hosted Charles I’s Parliament in the English Civil War.

If you do get the chance to visit, which is rare, have a look at the impressive ceiling. It was restored by Wren and has vaults and bosses which are intricately carved with letters and symbols. It’s mind-boggling to think of someone creating them all those yeras ago.

East Clothing - Oxford

31-32 Queen Street, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 1ER

23.03.2009

Bopeepsheep’s definition is perfect! There are a lot of nice clothes in here, which shouldn’t be limited to middle-aged women. It’s all quite bohemian, floaty and flowery, and the collections have names like 'indigo rose’ and 'rive gauche’. It’s not as pretentious as it sounds and there are lots of really nice down-to-earth tops, which have a very flattering cut. There are also some items of clothing that look like they’ve been cut out of curtains for the Von Trapp family. The sizing’s a bit all over the place, but usually in a complimentary way. It’s quite expensive, but similar to somewhere like Marks and Spencers or Monsoon for the basic items.

Transun Travel - Oxford

1a Iffley Street, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4 1AS

23.03.2009

Transun Travel - Oxford

23.03.2009

I’d like to be able to review a trip taken with Transun, or their customer service, or anything really. Unfortunately for me and for them, all I can go by is the fact that they don’t seem to answer their phones. This seems like a rather fatal flaw in gaining customers, which can’t be good in this sort of financial climate. The website offers some really interesting winter holidays, including travel to the Arctic and Lapland. Not being an expert in how such trips work, I thought I’d ring to get some more information or to request a brochure. Just a whim, which might eventually have led to me booking a holiday, but has now resulted in a negative review.

Blue Tutors - Oxford

Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 4AQ

23.03.2009

Blue Tutors is a tutoring service that started in Oxford and Cambridge and still remains one of the most popular private tutoring services in Oxford. It employs mainly teachers, Oxford tutors and Oxford students, and is effectively an agency that can be used by tutors to find work and by clients to seek tutors. It’s mainly used by parents wanting an hour or two’s tuition a week for the children, but tuition is available in all areas from primary school to degree. There are tutors for English as a Foreign Language and even for some musical instruments. All tutors are qualified to a level above that which they teach and all have to give a demonstration lesson before being employed.

Rates start at £15 and go up to £55, depending on the level of tuition needed. They also offer a 3-tier system of tutors, depending on the amount of feedback/experience a tutor has. The more experienced the tutor, the more you pay.

In reality, it often comes down to who’s available at the right time, but if you live centrally and you want tuition in a common subject, you should have more choice.

How do I know all this? I work for them!
