Le Coq

Sometimes I think I must be complainy, difficult and a very demanding customer, but this time I must say I was calm and relaxed and I just do not know what was going on that last time I visited "Le Coq" in Neuenheim.
I was pleasantly surprised that when we were able to get a table without reservations at one of my favorite bistros in Heidelberg, on a Thursday night at that. Firstly rule, if you want to eat at Le Coq is make a reservation. Being able to walk in and get a table is like trying to win the Lotto, it doesn’t happen often but you are very happy when it does. Naturally, the place was packed and we sipped a very good Sauvignon Blanc from the open wine list and chatted, while waiting for our main courses. Our food came and both my friend, J., and I realized that our fish with champagne sauce and spinach was terribly undersalted. No problem, we both grabbed the salt shaker a few times and added some salt to our meal. No complaining going on here, just a few joking comments about the cook definantly not being in love.
Time to pay – and the very nice waiter asks us how the food was – people he asked – am I supposed to say good if it is undersalted. Hmmmm?! So we mentions that the fish entree could have used more salt. Is that really so terrible? Hmmmm?! Didn’t think so until the manager came over – smelling like stale smoke – and berates, yes berates, us for my comment. Telling me that I know nothing about making delicate champagne sauce and feeding 100’s of people a night. (Hey, who knows maybe the other 100 people thought the fish was undersalted. Do I know?) I gently try to let him know that I was asked how the food was and mentioned it was undersalted, no crime on my part and hey, I am still the customer and paying a good € 20,00 for my dish. Do I deserve this kind of attitude from the manager?
So anyways, now that I have vented, I feel better. I still love the french bistro Le Coq in Neuenheim, but I hope the manager has a better day the next time I eat there and the cook uses a bit more salt. Hey, but that is just my opinion.

PML, one of Heidelberg’s more stylish restaurant/bars, seems to have become one of those hit or miss places as of late. We were able to reserve the last table in the non-smoking section of PML, sadly right in front of the band that was going to start playing at 21:00, but happily the non-smoking area is downstairs near the bar and not upstairs, so there was ample opportunity to sport some people watching. Everything seemed to be going well, PML was pleasantly full and all the tables were occupied with people eating their dinner. We were genuinely surprised that so much was going on, on a Monday in Heidelberg. I guess PML must have also been surprised at their Monday night turnout as well, as they were painfully understaffed or as I fear maybe their staff was painfully under-trained.
We ordered our dinner and a bottle of wine and started pleasantly chatting with one other. The Cloudy Bay 2006 – Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand at € 45,00 a bottle is expensive (not PML’s fault), but worth every cent. If there is just one reason to go back to PML it is the Cloudy Bay, I don’t think I have seen it anywhere else here in Heidelberg on a wine list, but if you do, order it. It is fantastic. Anyways, we are chatting with each other, eating some bread with olive oil and Sal de Ibiza, when we realize that the waitress seems to be pushing the wine, overfilling our wine glasses with every pour. Then suddenly the waitress asks if we would like another bottle and we are shocked to see that not only have we finished a bottle of wine even before our appetizers have arrived, but we have been waiting for over an hour now for one carpaccio and two salads. Yes, finally we did get our appetizers and then proceeded to wait another 45 – 60 minutes for our main dishes, but I am glad to say they were both excellent in quality and preparation. Naturally, since we didn’t have anymore wine by the time the food made it to our table; we splurged and ordered another bottle of Cloudy Bay.
Conclusion: Yes, I will give PML another chance (maybe even more) to get their service act back together again, because the food is very good and the wine list has been carefully selected, (Side note: their selection of open wines is also very good – for those who need to drive or do not want to drink a lot, you can also order wine by the 0,1 glass) additionally, the service has not been this bad and slow in a long time. I remember one of the first times I ate at PML, our food did not arrive at the table at the same time and the manager (without us complaining :) came over to our table and apologized, saying that he was sorry this happened and that when people go out to eat together they also want to have their dinner served together. He then provided us complementary dessert. All in all, worth another trying and another review in a few weeks / months.

Oskar Vinothek u. Restaurante

Just a stone throw away from the „Untere Strasse“ lies a very nicely decorated winebar in Heidelberg’s Haspelgasse. When I heard this from one of my friends, I was very excited and thought, finally a respectable winebar in Heidelberg. Entering the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised at the interior and the set-up of the winebar/restaurant. Yes, Oskar has two entrances directly opposite one another; you can either enter the bar area (smoking) or the restaurant (non-smoking), very practical.
Naturally, the important question here is how does Oskar rate as a restaurant and winebar? As a restaurant, I would give Oskar 4 – 5 stars. The food was excellent, service was fantastic and even though we were there on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was very empty, we still felt the special charm that Oskar radiates. As a winebar (Vinothek), I would give Oskar only 2 + stars. Sorry to say, it did not fill my expectations as a winebar. It felt like a ordinary restaurant. The open wine list showed only 3 reds and 3 whites and the bottle winelist did not display anything special either. I would say that this winelist and open wines did not stand out in any way against many other restaurants in Heidelberg. But what I really found disappointing was that when we ordered a bottle of St. Emilion (very good – at € 29,50) we were presented with standard wine glasses. In my personal opinion, any restaurant that adds the word Vinothek to their name should know the important of wine glasses to the amateur wine lover. They should now that wine lovers like to smell, sniff and swirl their wine, they enjoy the entire wine experience and this includes allowing a St. Emilion to breath, something that it does not do every well in a standard everyday (very small) glass. Sadly, when I asked for larger glasses, I was also told that they did not have any.
In conclusion, yes I would recommend Oskar Vinothek & Restaurant for their good food and service, but if you are looking for an exceptional wine experience, I am sorry to say this is not the place, wine lovers in Heidelberg will have to continue their search.
