This impressive structure and south-west gate is the most prominent part of the city walls which enclosed a large part of what is now called the "old town."

The walls were built by the Normans back in 1296 and this gate was, at that time, a single arch. However, later, a barbican was added to protect the gate. In the 19th century, other arches were knocked through owing to the increased number of people passing through. The wooden gates have not survived although the huge slots which housed the bolts can still be seen. During the French Revolutionary War a roof was added to proved an ammunition store.
My photo was taken during a visit to the town before my husband and I left Wales. -

On the side of a cliff path overlooking Manorbier Beach, King's Quoit is in one of the most beautiful positions for a Neolithic tomb and also one of the easiest to find!
It isn't far from the beach up the cliff path on the left of the beach (south-east side) but the path is steep and rocky in places so care should be taken.
There are two small stones which support a massive capstone measuring 15ft by 9ft. At the back corner there is another stone which is low and disappearing into the side of the grassy cliff. The height inside is 2ft 6inches - the chamber being partly underground.
There are also other interesting stones of the same kind which line part of the cliff face (which itself is mostly red sandstone).
Really worth a visit if you're at all interested in ancient history or just want to soak up the very special and mysterious atmosphere of this incredible tomb.

This is a wonderful large sandy beach, absolutely unspoilt and perfect for a day out, especially in good weather. It's about a five minute walk from the car park and this path is wheelchair friendly too.
There is a long grassy headland on either side of the beach and rocky cliff paths to explore. In fact, if you take the east one it will take you eight miles or so around to Tenby; great for hardened hikers - I only walked a small fraction of that route the other day! A short way along the cliff path on the same headland is a fascinating Neolithic burial chamber.
The beach is overlooked by a large medieval castle which was the birthplace of Gerald of Wales.
The whole area is great for walking or just sitting on the soft sand to hear the sea - which is apparently great for surfing too, so I'm told!
The most amazing thing about this beach is the fact that it is seldom crowded even in good weather. Please see my photos which were taken last week on a gorgeous warm and sunny day at the end of June - there were only a handful of people there!
Jane_Elizabeth I was thinking more along the lines of holy men not producing offspring to trace your family tree back to. I suppose he could be your great great great great great great great great uncle though ;-)

The only place to leave your car if you're visiting the beach, it's a 'pay and display' car park (£2 for 2 hours or £3 a day; 2 hours free parking for those with a disabled badge). There are toilets beside the entrance and an ice cream van during the season. From here it's a five minute walk to the lovely beach or, in the opposite direction, to the castle.

A really nice shop to find beautiful greetings cards quite a bit cheaper than in the larger shops (like Clinton and WH Smiths). Most of the cards have the price on the backs (a small label) which is so much better than having to look for a letter code and then match it to a chart, as you now need to do almost everywhere else. Everything is categorised and labelled well so it's easy to find what you're looking for. There's plenty of wrapping paper, boxes, balloons, local postcards and small gifts too - and the staff are pleasant and helpful. Definitely recommended!

A large, well laid out shop with many interesting things to see - not just 'hardware'; there are indeed things for the home and garden but also a large range of camping equipment, walking sticks, hats and other clothes. When I was in there the other day they had a sale on good quality Regatta jackets and other waterproof clothing. You can also find postcards of the town and area. Friendly, pleasant staff too.

A surprisingly large post office just a short walk from the centre of town (past the old cinema). There are all the usual services offered which you'd expect in the main post office of a town but there is little merchandise for sale which is so often found these days (stationery, greetings cards and other things). There's plenty of potential to develop an interior shop because there is so much floor space. The man who served me the other day was very friendly and helpful - in fact, it was worth going in there just to see his nice smile! It's worth remembering that this PO closes at lunchtimes on Saturdays.

I found this to be disappointingly small with very few shops. Great if you're looking for fishing tackle and guns (not something I'm used to buying, I must admit). There is a lot of fresh produce available as well, quite a good cosmetics stall and a well stocked pet shop. There's a little cafe in the middle too for reasonably priced teas, coffees and snacks.

This is an amazing gift shop and I'd be amazed if you came out of here without buying something! It's really huge and stuffed, everywhere you look, with souvenirs and gifts for all the family. Everything is tastefully laid out and very eye-catching and really you need a lot of time to look round properly.
There's a great range of Welsh-themed gifts; toys for children of all ages, plastic things for the seaside - colourful beachballs, buckets and spades and more; hats, model cars and lovely framed pictures. I also noticed that they sell 'golliwogs' of many kinds (toys large and small) which you don't see much anymore. Something for every budget, from picture postcards and keyrings to excellent quality china ornaments.
The lady who was working in there when I went in to browse three days ago was delightful - very helpful and friendly.
Probably the only gift shop you need to visit when in Tenby - altogether, an easy 5 star!

A very large and useful car park for the north beach in Tenby (hence the name of the car park), which is about ten minutes' walk from there (the town is nearer 15-20 minutes). Free from October to March and then it's 50p for 2 hours or £2 a day for cars (see one of my photos for more details). There is a ramp walkway to one side (behind the area set aside for coaches) which takes you up to the main road, which you then follow downhill to get to the beach or town. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the distance to the beach or town which might cause problems for some people.

Jane_Elizabeth I’m somehow sure you are right Roger !!
