Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising - Notting Hill

2 Colville Mews, Lonsdale Road, London W11 2AR

15.01.2008

A fabulous collection of every kind of ephemera you can think of, from cereal packets to postcards, Robert Opie's museum takes you from Victorian times to the present day through consumer products. It's unexpectedly moving, as well as a lot of fun if you're a collector or have ever taken an interest in the 'stuff' that surrounds us.

Poetry Cafe - Covent Garden

22 Betterton street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9BX

15.01.2008

The Society runs regular poetry events in its lovely boho cafe. Come here to see established poets do readings, watch up and coming writers perform for the first time, or even take part in an open mic yourself. The food is quite pricey but usually worth it (all the produce is from Neal’s Yard, round the corner).

The Little Angel Theatre - Islington

14 Dagmar Passage, London N1 2DN

14.01.2008

This little theatre's been putting on excellent puppet shows since 1961. It's essentially geared towards children but great fun for adults too, and if you're inspired by the spectacle there are lots of puppetry classes at the in-house 'Puppet Academy'!

Gate Cinema - Notting Hill

Notting Hill Gate, Notting Hill, London W11 3JZ

13.01.2008

A great little one-screen cinema, showing arthouse films as well as live opera from the Met in New York and kids films on a Saturday morning.

One of the first cinemas to allow you to take a drink in to the film, the Gate also has very comfy double seats at the back and tables between the chairs, so you can bring nibbles in too - an altogether more sophisticated cinema experience. The tiny bar is a cool place to have a drink before the film, but best avoided if you're in a big group.

Wellcome Collection - Bloomsbury

183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE

13.01.2008

A brand new museum close to the British Library and Euston station, the Wellcome Collection is pretty much unique in its dedication to 'considering what it means to be human'. It does this through exhibitions with intriguing titles like 'the heart' and 'sleeping and dreaming', complemented by an impressive range of illuminating talks and film screenings.
