Khublai Khan - Edinburgh

43 Assembly Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH6 7BP

05.07.2010

I loved this place :) Ended up in here for a hen night, was a bit sceptical at first due to the meat choices, however for anyone a bit more adventurous than myself you're in for a treat. There is certainly plenty to choose from, meat, veg, noodle wise etc. There are menu suggestions available (which were great) or you can simply create a meal of your choice. Once you have all the ingredients you simply hand the bowl over to the chef to cook ( didnt take long at all) and then a waiter will bring it back to you :) It was excellent value for money, we went along on the Thursday evening and got the pre-theatre prices. Starters were delicious as were the deserts, and some of the predefined meal names are hilarious!! A bit of history can be found in the toilets with a brief insight in Ghengis (sp) Khan himself. The staff were great, the food was great, everything about the place was great, i'd highly recommend it :)

Chocolate Soup - Edinburgh

2 Hunter Square, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1QW

28.07.2008

I met my friend in here for a morning chat, i’d never been in before so it was all new to me. I got a hot chocolate with the marshmallows on top (not very adventurous, but delicious all the same) and i quite fancied a muffin, however we opted to get one between us as they are HUGE, it was also delicious. SOOO soft and the icing on the top was to die for, i will most definately be back!! A bit pricey perhaps, but worth it once in a while :)

Old Chain Pier Bar - Edinburgh

32 Trinity CR, Edinburgh, Scotland EH5 3EE

24.07.2008

I was bitterly disappointed in the Old Chain Pier, for all the service was fast and efficient the food left a lot to be desired! I had the Rob Roy Boullions which were supposed to be made with haggis, black pudding and minced beef, well i’ll be darned if i could find anything other than haggis in them, which disappointed me somewhat as i’m not a lover of haggis (however in small quantities i’ll eat it) My mum had a grilled salmon which was served on a hot plate which was swimming with grease! My son had fish pieces, which again were inedible due to the amount of grease the batter had soaked up! The portions were a good size, it’s just a shame about the food! We did put in a complaint and were told that we could have deserts on the house. I must admit the deserts were good :) . The place itself is positioned right on the waterfront, so if you like a nice view then it’s perfect. I wasnt actually in the bar so i cannot comment on that, but the conservatory could do with a bit of a freshen up, plus it’s rather bare which leaves it feeling a little cold, perhaps a few pictures and some more plants :)

I would like to think my experience in there caught the chef on a bad day, i have heard other people say they have enjoyed the food, so i may go back and give it the benefit of the doubt!

Nic That’s exactly what my experience was in here too. The food was disgusting, and I entirely agree about the conservatory needing a bit of a freshen up. It was bare, bland and not in the slightest bit comfortable. I felt like we’d been shoved in the garden shed or equivalent, just because we happened to have a child with us!

PizzaExpress - Edinburgh

23 North Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1SB

24.07.2008

Very classy for a pizza place, and i like the fact you can see the pizzas being freshly prepared (and it kept my kids amused). The food is lovely, if not a bit pricey for what it actually is though. The service was fast and efficient and the waitress kept making sure the kids were ok too. I had the best wine ever in there, it was the house white, Isola Talia i think it was called. It was so fruity and went down a little to well :) The food was piping hot and portions were of a good size. Kids were given an activity pack, so that kept them amused too. I like this place, and i will most certainly be back :)

Agenda Hotel - Edinburgh

92 St Johns Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH12 8AT

24.07.2008

The Agenda is a great place to eat, the food is of a high standard and you get a plentiful portion too. Always a good choice on the menu, whether you want a quick bite to eat or a 3 course meal, there is something to suit everyone. A great selection of wines too :) Drinks and food are both reasonably priced too. The decor is fabulous, quite plain, but VERY effective in creams and browns, very modern. With a little terraced area at the front it’s great to sit outside in the summer, that is as long as you dont mind traffic rushing past on the main road! Great place to pop in for a night out too. The rooms in the hotel are of a good standard and are nicely decorated, very fresh feeling, and the bathrooms are lovely.

Good hotel, very clean, friendly staff. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

Slug and Lettuce - Edinburgh

Omni Centre, Greenside Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3AA

24.07.2008

I was very let down by this place, as i have been to various other establishments owned by the same company and the food and service was far superior! I had ordered a chicken and pasta dish, and my friend had ordered a pasta dish which was supposed to have roasted vegetables with it. Instead my chicken dish came with the roasted vegetables and my friends dish came with a miniscule amount of pasta sauce! The service was not great either, oh, and my chicken was dry! I did have soup for a starter though, and i must admit, it was nice. Thank goodness i did have that as i’d been leaving the place as hungry as i was when i walked in otherwise! I dont think i’ll be back!

It is a nicely decorated place, and i have been in for a quick drink before heading to the cinema, but food wise, i’ll give it a miss in future!

The Black Rose Tavern - Edinburgh

49 Rose Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2NH

24.07.2008

Great little Rock Bar, good jukebox, well decorated with some fabulous bits and pieces that you could only expect to find in a rock bar :) Drinks are reasonably priced, food too so i believe, although i have never had any. Friendly atmosphere, friendly staff. Friendly clientele too. Good Rock Bars are hard to find, so this one i would definately recommend :)

Scottish Seabird Centre - North Berwick

The Harbour, North Berwick, Scotland EH39 4SS

24.07.2008

I love the Scottish Seabird Centre, it’s a great place to take the kids as there are a great variety of things for them to do. Although the place itself is not all that big, it’s amazing what has been crammed in. There is a gift shop and a little cafe with nice food, although both are quite pricey! From the outdoor observation deck you can look through the telescopes and watch the puffins on Craigleith Island or the gannets on top of the Bass Rock, or just have a general look about the River Forth! The outdoor part of the cafe looks over the harbour, and it’s nice to sit out there on a sunny day. Activity wise there is always a busy programme of events for the kids, some special events are held for members too. You can view the birds on the islands from the webcams downstairs which you can operate yourself. There is a fish tank with crabs and various other critters in it which you can watch being fed (yuck). A little cinema shows various short films about the seabirds (the puffins are a must see). You also have the option to adopt your own Puffin, Gannet family or seal. This will cost you £25 but you get to name it and get your name up on the board. You get an adoption certificate, a cuddly toy and a little story book (well i did with my Puffin, his name is Jimenez). The puffins are there normally from April until late Aug, they steal the show for me. You can also register to help with SOS Puffin and help clear some of islands of tree mallow which has been threatening the habitats of the puffins.

Membership prices : Family 2 (2 adults and up to 4 children) £49

Family 1 (1 adult and up to 4 children) £39

Joint adult £36

Adult £21

Junior £13

These are for a year, and i really do think it’s well worth the money. With the membership you also get a 10% in the cafe and gift shop.

It’s a great place to visit, and always different activities to try out. The kids will love it :)

Nic I still need to get along there sometime soon! We’ll make a trip of it.

Jimmy Chungs Waverley - Edinburgh

17 Waverley Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1BQ

22.07.2008

Jimmy Chungs is a great place to eat if you are hungry and have little money! There is a great choice of food and you can go back for second helpings, and a third if you really fancy a little more :) The food is good quality and always nice and hot too. My only gripe is the fact that not once did i see any of the tables getting a wipe down after customers had left! The place was busy but that shouldnt be an excuse. You can get a set lunch buffet too which i think was only £5. I would go back again, despite the lack of table cleaning!

Javits Takeaway - Edinburgh

207 West Granton Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH5 1PD

22.07.2008

I find Javits to be a great place to order Take Away from, i have been doing so for 7 years now. I have never been let down by them, the food is usually delivered quickly, and if it is going to be a little longer they will tell you at the time of placing the order. The food is always hot, and you get big portions, well worth the money. The pizzas are fabulous and would recommend them to anyone. The kids meals are a decent size too, and also well worth the money. If there is a problem with the order after it has been placed they will always phone you back and let you know. I cannot fault Javits take Away at all. P.S. the Penne Picante is to die for :)
