Jesus Green Swimming Pool - Cambridge

Thompsons Lane, Jesus Green, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB5 8AQ

17.12.2007

On of the largest open air pools in the uk (possibly the largest), it is unheated and as such only open in the summer. Their defination of summer is very generous though... I have been swimming there at the end of september!!
It is very popular on a warm summers day, on other days it is used by the strange type who train for triathlons. Generally a good day out where others swimmers are friendly and very cheap too.

Cambridge Wine Merchants (Mill Road) - Cambridge

42 Mill Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB1 2AD

17.12.2007

Though a little more expensive than the £3 bottle of wine on offer in the local supermarket the selection of wine here is great. There are no 'bad' wines here which means you can feel safe in experimenting with something new and different. There is also a 10% student discount, but with a bit of knowledge you can extend this to 20%, but beware if your brain is not up to it there is no discount. Time to brush up on your trivial persuit questions...

The Mitre Tavern - Cambridge

Bridge Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB2 1UF

17.12.2007

Usually a quiet pub except when there are sporting events going on, this is a perfect place to have a quiet night out with a few friends. There is a good selection of beers at reasonable prices. For added interest it is on almost every singly pub crawl route so don't be supprised if a herd of elephants or a group of romans join you for half an hour. They will provide endless entertainment and a great talking point.

Henrys Cafe Bar - Cambridge

Quayside Quayside, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB5 8AB

17.12.2007

In summer this is a perfect place to spend the evening sipping a cocktail or a beer while sitting by the cam watching the wolrd go by. A very popular bar every day means that the atmosphere is always vibrant and exciting. During 'may-week' you will find it is frequented by students in spectacular black tie having a relaxed drink before departing to their various may balls where they party the night (and morning) away!!!

The Orchard Tea Gardens - Grantchester

Orchard Ho 45 Mill Way, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB3 9ND

17.12.2007

A simple hour of so out of Cambridge by punt, so only just down the road, is the only place to have tea and scones on a summer's afternoon. I have been here with friends and whiled away the whole day in the shade of the fruit trees. Chanpagne on the way there, tea and cake when you arrive, and if you have planned well Pimms on the way home. A truly sophicated way to spend your afternoon.

The Maypole - Cambridge

Portugal Place, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB5 8AF

17.12.2007

This is a great place to have a quiet pint or two with some friends. On the way back from the boathouses it is perfect for a relaxing drink with a large and tasty meal on a sunday afternoon. The classic drink, The Red-boy, is one that you have to try once. Try asking the barman for the history behind the drink for an interesting tale. The Maypole is also the haunt of the Gents, the best singing group in Cambridge by miles. Find out a date when they are visiting and get there early as it packs out quickly for the Gents. As a happy bonus it is the latest pub open in Cambridge so is a handy place to remember at midnight when you are still a little thirsty...

Cambridge Union Society - Cambridge

9A Bridge Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB2 1UB

17.12.2007

My main experience of the union is when is has been hired out for an event of some description where I found that the bar is amazingly cheap and the bar staff quick and well organised as well as fun. I hear (and have now attended a couple) that there are lively debates and discussions held here regularly with speakers of very high standing from Prime Ministers to cultural ledgends.

Curry Mohl - Cambridge

Millers Yard Mill Lane, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB2 1RQ

17.12.2007

With the great student deal of £10 for a curry and a drink this is one of the best places to go on a 'formal' swap. Or if you're not a student then a great place for a large group to go out and celebrate anything. They have a bring your own drink policy so that as well as buying drinks there you can bring your most loved drink...
Many nights have been had here with great (though hazy!!) memories.

Punting - Cambridge

Granta Place, Mill Lane, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB2 1RS

17.12.2007

Punting is one of the 'must do's' in Cambridge. You can choose from a meandering trip along the backs to see in colleges from a whole new perspective with a guide. The guides all have great knowledge of this history of the different colleges (always entertaining even if only loosely based on truth!!). If you are feeling adventrous and have some time to spare then 'self-punting' is definatly the way to go, just make sure you do it in the correct Cambridge way (by standing on the back), if in doubt watch how students and guides are doing it, and not the Oxford way by standing in the middle and going nowhere!!!!!
If you have the whole day to yourself then it is wothwhile punting over the 'rollers' and down to granchester where there is a great tea room with history a-plenty for you.

Cambridge Army & Navy Surplus Store - Cambridge

29 Hobson Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB2 3HH

17.12.2007

Essential shop to pay a visit to if you are planning on doing anything that is outside the confort of your warm, centrally heated home! The staff are extremly helpful and know pretty much everything that you will ever need to know about the kit you need. They also will sort out any old kit that needs replacing or repairing (for vets etc.) If you are from an otc or are a cadet then you get a 10% discount too!!!
