I adore Scruffys, and have been going there for years. It is by far the best value for money pub in Birmingham City Centre, and is ideal for either a daytime drink, or a ‘get-dressed-up’ big night out, pre-club or to stay there all the night. The staff are fantastic and remember faces, so before long you will feel very comfortable and at home. The rock music (mostly metal and classic rock…although the DJ does accept requests in related genres) is loud enough to dance drunk to, but quiet enough to talk over. You have to pick your way through the smokers to get inside, but that’s part of the fun.

Chez Jules is one of my favourite restaurants in the city centre, either for a casual mid-shop lunch on a Saturday, or for a slightly more formal meal in the evening. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual - you could be wearing jeans or an evening gown and feel at home in either. The food is classic, excellent quality and there is wonderful, quick service by the friendly staff. They also have excellent weekly deals and menu specials which are well worth looking out for.

The Electric is definitely one of Birmingham’s finer points. Bizarrely, despite its subtle class and retro appeal, it is never overcrowded and always has that uniquely personal feel of somewhere you’ve accidentally stumbled upon that happens to be amazing. It’s decadent and glamourous without being over the top. The food on offer is high quality without being pretentious, and they manage to show both unusual independent and blockbuster films without losing that blissfully alternative feel. Definitely not one too miss.
