Coco Bliss - Darlington

54 Bondgate, Darlington DL3 7JJ

23.10.2010

Opened in September 2010
Indian and steak restaurant
The Indian food is of Bengali style
Very modern and decorated in style, the restaurant is on two floors
It seems a strange theme combining Indian and steak but it works here fine.
As a rule I would never choose non-Indian food from an Indian nor would I choose something different to a steak from a steakhouse – I think a good Indian restaurant obviously specialises in Indian food but they normally do very poor with anything different
I can say that in the case of the Coco Bliss, the Indian food is of the finest quality and surprisingly the steaks are very good
They don’t have a huge selection of steak but what they do have is of good quality and the chefs know their business
For parties of guests who may have the odd non-curry eater then they could go for the steak option without any worries. (Veggies who don’t like Indian food could just double up on the wine)

Bootham Tavern - York

29 Bootham, York, North Yorkshire YO30 7BW

09.04.2010

The Bootham Tavern is located right on the city walls.
It is a pub but also offers accommodation.
They only have a couple of rooms but they are clean and tidy.
Rooms are very basic and have double beds, TV, Tea / Coffee and shower / toilet.
The room I used was £25 per night per room based on single occupancy or £22 per person based on two sharing.
They do not do breakfast but they are loads of cafes near by.
The rate is very good in comparison to local hotels.
They only have enough parking for a couple of cars and parking is around the corner.

The Churchill Hotel - York

65 Bootham, York, North Yorkshire YO30 7DQ

09.04.2010

I did not book this hotel but another hotel had apparently overbooked and therefore they moved me into here.
The Churchill is a 3* hotel and is very grand indeed and I would have expected it to be a 4*
Parts of the hotel are based on a Winston Churchill theme.
The restaurant is extremely top class and most of the customers were locals.
No dress code mentioned but everyone was well dressed.
The service was 100% and the location was only minutes walk away from the city wall.
Parking is free.
Everything about this hotel is very good and if I had to give a negative feedback it could only be on the room size.
Some rooms are quite small but to be fair so are many city centre hotels.
Top place and fair value for money

The Holme Lea Manor - York

Saint Peters Grove, York, North Yorkshire YO30 6AQ

09.04.2010

I booked The Holme Lea Manor through Booking.com many months before my stay.
Shortly before my stay, Holme Lea contacted me to explain they did not have a room for me even thou I booked many months in advance and the booking had been accepted.
I was told that they had moved me into the Churchill hotel around the corner.
Obviously not happy about this but with time not been on my side I just went along with it as it was so close to the booking date.
I had originally chosen Holme Lea because I wanted a 4* accommodation which offered luxury rooms and the reviews and photos were also very good.
I booked their most luxurious room and was looking forward to it very much.
The Churchill hotel is a 3* and even thou I would stay again it was not a like-4-like alternative as the room was a standard room and was not what I was looking for on this special occasion.
I think it was very unfair of Holme Lea to cancel my booking after it was booked for so far in advance and they should have explained that the alternative room in the Churchill was not like-4-like to what I booked.

Meze - Darlington

113 Parkgare, Darlington DL1 1RZ

24.11.2008 (aktualisiert am 14.09.2009)

Meze is a quaint Turkish restaurant what is tiny in size and looks more like a small cafe.
It is run by a charming husband and wife team who previously part owned another Turkish restaurant in town what has since closed (Istanbul). They were bought out of Istanbul by the other part owners because of differences on how the restaurant should run but they were not successful after all.
Meze is run very low key with its dimmed lights and they have succeeded in making a lovely calming atmosphere in this small café / restaurant
All meals are prepared on the premises and everything is done from fresh. I know many including myself had bad experiences from the Istanbul restaurant but the problems only started when this husband and wife team had left but this little place is being run by folks who care about the quality they offer and seem to be doing a pretty good job.
Parking can be a bit tricky but Borough road is probably your best bet.
This is the only Turkish in town but don’t expect a big restaurant - think cafe size instead.

Francs Restaurant - Chester

14 Cuppin Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 2BN

13.09.2009

This is a lovely little restaurant with friendly staff and efficient service.
Portion sizes are fairly good and the food does not seem to fall under the fiddly little rich French portions category.
(To me) The style and layout is very much like a traditional Irish pub what gives it a laid back and casual feel.
In general;
Cleanliness 9/10
Quality of food 9/10
Cost 9/10.
Staff 9/10

Chez Jules - Chester

71 Northgate Street, Chester, Chester, Cheshire CH1 2HQ

13.09.2009

Really good experience with a good atmosphere.
Tuesday night is special night at £17 per head for a two course with wine and by the way I am talking about a bottle of wine each for this price.
The menu seems to be more a feel of a Mediterranean than French but very delightful regardless.
Lovely place, great staff and great food.
You should book a table especially for Tuedays.
In general;
Cleanliness 9/10
Quality of food 9/10
Cost 9/10 for Tuesdays but pricey every other day.
Staff 9/10

Donato & Sandro - Chester

121 Brook Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 3DU

13.09.2009

Family run Italian restaurant with friendly staff.
Located right on the edge of the city with a private car park.
Apart from the usual pasta’s and pizza’s what by the way are really good they also have a special board what offers the likes of fresh fish dishes.
All food is freshly prepared and is all good quality. I have only been delighted here and have not heard of bad reports.
In general;
Cleanliness 8/10
Quality of food 9/10
Cost 8/10
Staff 8/10

Cafe Naj - Chester

3d Hoole Road, Chester, Cheshire CH2 3NQ

13.09.2009

Very small restaurant thou quite deceiving when passing by as the back wall is all mirrored what gives it a much bigger feel.
Very pleasant and helpful staff thou communication with some is fairly limited.
Food is okay and certainly not poor thou to score it in one word I would have to say it is average. The decor was probably nice in the 1980’s but it could ready do with a tidy up now and with the place being quite small you would have thought they would have done something by now.

In general;
Cleanliness 6/10
Quality of food 6/10
Cost 8/10
Staff 7/10

Chester Tandoori - Chester

39-41 Brook Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 3DZ

13.09.2009

Chester Tandoori is a well established restaurant that still has a 70’s / 80’s look.
It has plenty of seats in the many open type plan rooms the building has so you are not sat in view of all of the other guests.
The staff is friendly but not always the best to communicate with if you are asking for something from the norm.
The food is good and typical of most Indians thou it does not excel from this category. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad place it’s just seems a little dark, dated and could do with a new menu to pull it from the average.
In general;
Cleanliness 7/10
Quality of food 7/10
Cost 8/10
Staff 7/10
