Otterspool promenade, Liverpool, Merseyside

Fancy a stroll along the Mersey, but don’t want to the bustle of the docks around the centre? Well there’s plenty of places to choose from, but I like Otterspool Promenade.
It’s a big patch of green, about 100m wide, that runs alongside the Mersey for almost as long as you want, but it does finish: south east (away from the centre) it leads to nowhere interesting, and in the other direction the promenade continues until the docks (including Albert) are reached. So yes, it is possible to walk from or to the centre along the promenade. I did it in a hurry once and it took me about 45 minutes but I do have long legs and was late for work. I swear it looked shorter on the map.
So what’s great about the promenade? Great mersey views and sunsets, and in the day time there’s normally a fresh breeze for kites. There’s a well kept and well stocked kids playground that I’d be envious of if I was a wee nipper.
I like people watching here. Benches are dotted around and people are generally in ample measure, but never too many. Occasionally there are kite festivals here. I really meant it about that breeze.
Thirsty? There’s a pub selling adequate drinks and I did spy a menu on my last visit. It’s an average chain pub, but it suffices as it’s got benches. I like benches. Somehow I feel this review doesn’t quite do it justice, but I’ve rambled on enough as it is.

when i moved back to liverpool in November '06 I said to my flatmate that i didn’t mind where we lived, as long as it was in one of the nice leafy suburbs in L17 next to the park. Sefton park. Reason? Well, sefton park contains 2.6km² of trees, water features and grass.
Perfect for a summers day. As has been noted in other reviews, Lark Lane is just round the corner for refreshments and food. There’s also a cafe in the middle.
Highlights: the boating lake, the palm house (with a peter pan statue), the daffodils round the eastern edge in the springtime, the slightly overgrown patches here and there and the grassy spaces for football, frisbee and barbecues.
Otterspool park is also nearby for those wanting a view of the mersey. You want more? ok, the circumference is about 2.4m/3.8km so it’s a nice run. Most people run anti-clockwise why? i’ve noticed people seem to prefer to run anticlockwise the world over. I did write “boating lake” earlier, with a half good reason. there are plans to implement the possibility of more boats on the lake in late '08, but i wouldn’t hold your breath.
Unfortunately, as if to coincide with the building work in the centre for the capital of culture, the park is being renovated after years of neglect. The lakes are being drained and many trees are being cut down and new ones replanted. Most of the big statues and monuments are also being reblitzed, so instead visitors get the opportunity to view contemporary builders fences. This doesn’t disturb much of the park at any one time though. but be warned.

sigh.
I agreed with the other reviewers in every way, up until about 4 months ago. Hannah’s had a refurbishment, and It Was Not Good.
They’ve bought horrible furniture, paved over the outdoor bit and, well, their soul. Now there’s lots of space, uncomfortable seats, overpriced drinks and .. well it’s got no soul.
An example? Well I’ve been told (so i don’t actually know) that the DJ’s now have to stick to a music code.
I don’t know whether they still do the jazz on a Wednesday.
If you want good jazz, pop up to The Caledonia on Catherine street on a friday night for the best jazz night I’ve been to since Hannah’s imploded.

Doth Thou Liketh Books? Verily much so? Than Thou Hast Found A New Church.
Reid of Liverpool is a small little place tucked away behind a bus stop on mount pleasant. And how pleasant it is. Apparently it’s “the only surviving Georgian, purpose built retail premises incorporating living accommodation in Liverpool erected circa 1785” but due to the city council erecting aforementioned yellow bus stop in front of it the looks are somewhat diminished.
A plethora of literary treats and gems can be found here, and somehow they always manage to get a new collection in. I sometimes think this shop is owned by one of the merchants in the Discworld who only stay in a city for a couple of hours … but enough obscure literary references.
In short, if you’re after a pleasant afternoon with the smell of old books then here’s the place to come. Also check out “The Amorous Cat” on Lark Lane.

Simply my first point of call if i need an electric cable, screw or obscure electric fuse of some description. Fair enough, most larger items (mixers, teevee, CCTV, kettle etc) can be found cheaper online, but attentive customer service and an answer, if not product, for most queries.
