Wycliffe Fish and Chip Shop - Napier
Oldham Avenue 1, Onekawa, 4001 Napier
29.06.2009
Just because it holds amusing memories of sneaking down to the chip shop at lunch time to get garlic chips, the Wycliffe Fish and Chip Shop has to get a mention. It’s not much to look at on the outside but the quality and taste is what brings customers in again and again, (actually better than any I’ve tasted in England, yes, it is true!) Get the garlic chips, they’re amazing!
Kiwi Adventure Company - Napier
West Quay 58, Pandora, 4110 Napier
29.06.2009
We all need a bit of excitement in our lives and if you’re completely lacking in any form of it you should treat yourself to a day with the Kiwi Adventure Company. If you don’t want to go too far out of your comfort zone, they have a climbing wall catered to all levels of experience. Choose from spending a day kayaking, canyonning, Canadian canoeing, caving or any of the other outdoor adventure trips they offer.
I have been on a few of the canyonning trips and this is one to build some serious self confidence; swimming, ducking, jumping, diving and all-but flying our way through the Esk Valley Gorge. Putting our lives into the hands of our guides didn’t seem to matter to us as they were incredibly experienced, trustworthy and a hell of a lot of fun! They were great days out!
As cliché as this sounds Kiwi Adventure actually have something for the whole family to enjoy. I would recommend any of their adventure experiences to anyone and everyone!
Hamleys - West End
188 - 196 Regent Street, Soho, London W1B 5BT
17.06.2009
Tickle me giggly and make me a kid again! I want to grow up in Hamleys! This magical 7 storey toy store is the perfect model of what happiness is in all about in its entirety.
From the moment you walk through the exquisite doors which are generally decorated by staff hired from ‘once upon a time land’, you are surrounded by toys, teddies, games, models, cars, bubbles, and anything and everything conceivable to stimulate a child’s imagination. There are displays galore ranging from magically appearing snow in the Christmas time, to remote control cars, to magic markers, and flying UFO’s. If you’re intending to leave without blowing the budget I would recommend leaving the kids at home, this place is an addiction and everything in it is a must have, but, in saying that this store is vibrant, bubbly and an adventure every child should experience.
Parsons Green Tube Station - Fulham
48 Parsons Green Lane, Fulham, London SW6 4HU
17.06.2009
If you’re ever running trough Parsons Green Tube station at 7.30 in the morning and are in desperate need of some water, it’s okay to ask! The friendly staff member behind the scratched up glass window will proudly give you the good stuff; bottled H2O that is, not tap. He’ll also happily tell you the story of his 5 km run at 3am that morning, but it’s fine to wait and listen because the train won’t come for another seven minutes anyway. I like this change; a happy underground staff member, who is actually there to help and not make life just that much harder on an already crowded/busy/stressful London week day journey. Ta to that!
The Hurlingham - Fulham
360 wandsworth bridge road, Fulham, London SW6 2TZ
17.06.2009
It’s always a good week down Wandsworth Bridge Road, or, to be more specific – down at the The Hurlingham Pub; Monday night, trivial pursuits, Tuesday night, £5 burgers, Wednesday and Thursday any special they may have on offer from their delicious menu of home made food, Friday night, Live music and free champagne cocktails for the ladies, and just because too, not even a catch! Saturday, well it’s Saturday! And then Sunday ends the week with the grand finale of the traditional Sunday roast. Tis not bad at all really.
The Hurlingham is also available for private hire and with a beer garden, the comfortable décor, the welcoming staff and an extensive range of wines on offer you would be in for a good night out. A definite recommendation of mine.
Disneyland - Los Angeles
Anaheim, Los Angeles
12.06.2009
If you’ve got kids or are just a big kid then go. Actually even if you consider yourself to be an over-the-hill, down-in-the-mouth, old grump you should go! It will change you/make you smile from ear to ear!
Disneyland is full of fun, laughter, oversized cartoon characters, parades, amusement, excitement, rides, rides, rides and more laughter and fun. The huge range of rides will have you queuing for up to 3 hours but with all the goings-on going on your child-like self will not even notice the normally absurd waiting time; because of this you’ll need at least 3 days to get around it all.
Indiana Jones, Swiss Family Robinson, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and all their friends are permanent residence and are often joined by special guests from the latest Disney blockbuster; usually in the form of an overly animated, energetic and vibrant parade, of course!
If you’re one to get a song stuck in your head I wouldn’t advise the, ‘It’s A Small World’ ride. It will be embedded for a good while after as you’re travelling through an exceedingly (it seems) long cave with mechanical dolls dressed up from every country of the world. I’m sure the kids wouldn’t mind missing this one either!
If you can resist all of the Disney products on offer and bring your own lunch it works out to be reasonably inexpensive for a great family adventure.
Castle Mountain Hostel - Calgary
Box 1358, Banff, Banff National Park, T1L 1B3 Calgary
12.06.2009
Castle Mountain Wilderness Hostel is located in Banff National Park, British Columbia between Banff and Lake Louise. Wilderness is most certainly the nature of this place; surrounded by hiking trails, ski resorts, forest and wildlife (we received a wake up call from a local bear just outside our window) it is an outdoor enthusiasts dream (without the bears, of course). Unfortunately for me this was a one night stop over but even this short stint has left a lasting impression on me. Like most hostels Castle Mountain collects cultures from around the world. And, in the down time it’s just right to sit around the central fire place in the large lounge area and have a drink and a think with your fellow travelers. During my time here I found the staff to be incredibly friendly and naturally accommodating, the interior to be cozy, comfortable, warm and so, so welcoming. I would recommend anyone to stay here just keep your eyes out for those bears!
Aladin - Bethnal Green
132 Brick Lane, Brick Lane, London E1 6RU
11.06.2009
I was told not expect much of the service when coming here but the food would be worth it. They were right about the service, although I can’t fault their enthusiasm, unfortunately, however, they were not so spot on about the food. For me this Indian was average; the lamb was just a tad tough and undercooked for my liking, possibly anyone’s liking. Granted though, it is still a good little spot to go when wondering brick lane; take your wine and beer with you as this baby is completely BYO.
Volupte Lounge - Holborn
9 Noewich Street (off Fetter Lane), Off Chancery Lance, London EC4A 1EJ
11.06.2009
‘Va Va Voom Bang Bang, in these shoes? Lets do it!’ And so the lyrics go. The saucy soundtrack and sexy starlets in Volupte last night came through on all the promises of the evening’s given name, ‘Burlesque and Blues.’
Book a table, for two or four or more, or just as many as you desire, eat, drink and be bloody Mary! Or whatever cocktail on the extensive menu takes your fancy.
Everything about Volupte boasts all things fabulous that we, our entire generation, missed out on for not living in the 1930’s Art Deco era; it’s almost bragging, teasing that we weren’t there. The corsets, the band, the dancers (Roxy Velvet, Ruby Blues, Vicky Butterfly, Kitty Bang Bang), the wallpaper! Even the stairs into the restaurant lead you straight into the past, right into an almost rebellious speakeasy scene. Our entertainment danced and sang (ever heard Nirvana, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ performed as a blues? It’s amazing! wish I’d thought of it). They played and stripped through the night, leaving bearing all bar a few good tassels for themselves and many a good memory for the boys.
Once the show ended the night didn’t. Our Lenny Kravitz look-alike DJ, out of date but not out of place, kept the dancers going and going and going.
The Volupte show is worth the £10 entrance fee, then it’s up to you how much you spend; there is a delicious menu on offer as well as a large wine and cocktail range. This is a definite goer for a good night out.
Napier Municipal Theatre - Napier
Tennyson Street 119, 4001 Napier
09.06.2009
This 1930’s Art Deco building, which was famously destroyed in the 1931 earthquake and celebrates the liberty of women during this era, sits idyllically in the city centre of Napier. The décor is completely in vogue with Napier’s Art Deco history and name for being the Art Deco capital of the world. The 1154 seat theatre was rebuilt after the earthquake and opened for it’s first performance on the 3rd June 1938. For these reasons alone the Municipal Theatre not only hosts many of Napier’s plays, shows, and production, but is also a very sort after tourist destination.
The Theatre has a bar for the half time breaks, large changing rooms for the performers and, of course, it’s own resident ghost; well so they say.
It is a truly unique building, interesting tourist destination and always comes through for an eventful night out for all.
