Princi - Soho

135 Wardour Street, London W1F 0UT

07.01.2012

Seating can be a problem, and the service is usually middling to terrible (there’s no queuing system at the counter, and they seem to like people who speak Italian more), but the food is divine.
Because it gets so full, it’s not really a place for a quiet meal, and the portion sizes are a little too expensive for what you get out of it. So, not the ideal place for a cash-strapped student.
If you can look past the terrible service and that practically every mouthful costs you £1, then you’ll really enjoy the food. My favourite thing to take away are those almond kisses… With tea in the morning and slightly warmed up, they’re just perfect.

The Year Round Christmas Shop - London Bridge

55a Tooley Street, (Hays Galleria), London SE1 2QN

26.12.2008

If you like anything Christmas-related, then make a visit to The Christmas Shop. It has all the Christmas-related paraphernalia that you could ever need (albeit at sometimes high prices). There are some original decorations, which are hard to find anywhere else, so shelling out a couple of pounds is worth it. There are also suits you can buy/hire, and various flashing badges if you are so inclined.
They also sell delicious candy canes, for those who have a little bit of a sweet tooth. To be honest, the only reason I came across the Christmas Shop in the first place was because I was looking for candy canes to eat, um, I mean, give to children…
Anyway, that’s beside the point. One of the most memorable things about the shop for me was the Santa ornament in front of the till, which keeps a countdown of the days until Christmas.

Northfields Station - Ealing

Northfield Avenue, Hanwell, London W13 9RL

17.12.2008

Well-serviced by local buses (E2 and E3) and quite close to West Ealing. It’s surrounded by a bunch of independent retailers, which aren’t always the cheapest places around, but good if you need to grab something in a hurry. The station is quite cold in winter, but is served very well by the Piccadilly Line on the Heathrow branch. Trains come less frequently than if you went to Acton Town, but you’re more likely to get a seat here.

Westfield London - Shepherds Bush

Ariel Way, Shepherds Bush, London W12 7GF

17.12.2008

Having trawled around Lakeside, Brent Cross, and the like, I don’t really see the difference between Westfield and the rest. It’s huge, but that also means it’s easy to get lost (and the staff that I asked pointed me in completely the wrong direction to the place I wanted to go). As there are so many people, this can make moving around difficult, because there’ll always be someone trying to push you out of the way, and someone walking way too slowly.
Westfield has some shops that the other shopping centres lack, such as Tiffany’s (!) and De Beers. Mind you, what I overheard from a group of women as I was passing says it all, really: “Keep on walking; we can’t afford any of this.”

KOKO - Camden

1a Camden High Street, Camden, London NW1 7JE

10.08.2008 (aktualisiert am 17.12.2008)

I won tickets for James Baxter and Royworld at the iTunes Festival, and I love this place! I’ve never gone clubbing in it (only saw it when it was being used as a gig venue), but what made it a thumbs up in my book was a simple thing: AIR CONDITIONING. You know how hot these places can get, and I would’ve probably fainted if the air con wasn’t on. Aah, bliss. The whole of the decor reminds me of an old theatre, and there seems to be a touch of nostalgia about the place.
The price of drinks is fairly steep, but hey, what can you do?

Boston Manor Tube Station - Hanwell

Boston Road, Hanwell, London W7 2AX

04.10.2008

Boston Manor is my 'local’ Tube station, and I use that term lightly, as it takes a 20 minute bus ride for me to get there, and I live in nearby Southall. Boston Manor in the heart of the Hanwell suburbs… You know, the area that likes to think they’re all posh but really aren’t? Yeah, anyway…
It is served by the Piccadilly Line, and is a few stops away from Heathrow Airport. One of the main advantages of using this station is that it’s fairly remote (well, as remote as London can get, anyway) so most people won’t have a clue where Boston Manor is, and therefore there’ll be less crowding than if you decide to go to Ealing Broadway or Ealing Common. The downside of this, however, is that Eastbound trains only come about 8-10 minutes apart. If you’re running late, avoid this station. The station is kept quite tidy (although the ticket hall is TEENY), and there’s the usual benches dotted around the platforms.
Obviously, it’s served by a few buses (the E8 and the 195). The E8 comes on a regular basis, and will either take you towards Ealing or Brentford, and the 195 (which comes less often - I’ll leave it at that before I start ranting on about it) will take you towards Southall or Brentford.
I guess Boston Manor’s all right as a local station. I’m willing to wait just a little bit longer for a train in exchange for a possible seat/more room to breathe.

Ealing Kebab - Ealing

179 Uxbridge Road, Ealing, London W13 9AA

29.07.2008

As the reviewer above said, not a great variety of food, but all food is made fresh on the premises, including all the bread and sauces. Mmmm… Everything is so cheap, too! For about £7, you get a whole mountain of food - a drink, chips, salad, lots of chicken and a large slice of naan bread - that’s enough to feed two people (although they do think you’re a bit strange if you only order one meal). The place is fairly clean too if you want to eat in.
Basically, if you want a healthy and cheap option to fast food, go here.

barry james just down the street from the kebab place is a pub called
all bar one good music {when i was there}

Castle Restaurant - Inverness

41 Castle Street, Inverness, Highlands and Islands IV2 3DU

27.07.2008

This restaurant is excellent value for money. Seriously - they give you enough food to feed an elephant! The food is made fresh on the premises and tastes delicious. The place is clean, and it’s one of the few restaurants where I’m not concerned about who’s been sitting at my table before me and what they’ve been doing, if you get what I mean. The staff are happy and smiley, and cheered me right up after a bad day - service is also very quick. If you aren’t stuffed after a meal, they also have a wide range of desserts to gorge yourself on. Yum!

Jimmy Chungs - Inverness

28 Union Street, Inverness, Highlands and Islands IV1 1PX

27.07.2008

Jimmy Chung’s is your classic Chinese buffet, with the usual fare of egg fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, fried won-ton, etc. The food’s nothing special, but hey, you get what you pay for. There’s also stuff like chips for those of you who don’t like Chinese food very much, i.e. children, although I really don’t see the point in paying all the money just to eat chips.
The place is laid out well, I’ll give them that, and it’s very accessible - they have a lift!
They have a large selection of drinks, and some Chinese (and Thai!) beer available too.
The prices are OK (although I forget how much), and children under 11 are cheaper. Bear in mind, however, that the price increases as the day goes on, and after 5pm they start charging the evening prices.
If you’re just looking for cheap and cheerful Chinese food, Jimmy Chung’s is the right place. If you want something of a better quality, you’d better go somewhere else.

btocher There’s one of these in Edinburgh, too, though I’ve never visited it yet.

Rammi They have a few dotted around Scotland, right? I only visited the Inverness one during my little trip to Scotland.

Quality Foods - Southall

47-61 South Road, London UB2 4ES

23.07.2008 (aktualisiert am 25.07.2008)

I love Quality Foods! As another reviewer said, you can find almost any Asian item in there. Basically, if you’re looking to cook a meal, you’ve come to the right place. They even sell Indian sweets and other delicacies from Asian countries.
Their prices are quite cheap - especially the mangoes! The staff are good-natured and friendly, will help you find whatever you’re looking for, and bag your stuff for you.
They also have a huge fruit and vegetable selection, and they sell yummy ice-cream inside (Kulfi, anyone?).
