El Sweetie - Sydney

It advertises itself as a "Sweet Shop and Tea Saloon", and that's just what it is. It's a very nicely-presented shop, quite large, with many tables. There are long glass cases filled with row upon row of baklava, cakes, pastries, chocolates...in fact, it probably has more sweets than any shop I've ever seen.
It's a great stop after a spicy lunch, for tea or coffee and a sugary confection that'll give you a boost for the rest of the afternoon.

Went on a Friday evening and found it mobbed. There's a lot of buzz and activity, and obviously a place to be seen, especially the meat market upstairs. But if you arrive after 6pm you're probably going to have stand, because the stools at the bar tables will be full, and all the tables will be occupied by those having dinner. And forget talking, it's one of the loudest non-club venues I've ever been to.
Twenty-three and want to be where the action is? Go for it. Want to avoid elbowing your way past over-primped and over-watered work mates on the pull? Give it a miss.
Lees Fortuna Court Chinese Restaurant - Sydney

Some friends told us it was a favourite of theirs, and took us. It was a great time.
It's definitely a place for groups. There were 6 at our large circular table, and many other large parties - including one kid's birthday party - were happily eating nearby.
Order a big mess of food (they're happy to suggest), slap it on the glass Lazy Susan in the middle, spin and share. I had some delicious san choy bow, some very nice roast duck, and several other dishes that escape me now.
They catered for the vegetarian at our table without a blink, as well. The service was funny, fast and friendly.
The best Chinese food I've had in Sydney, for sure, and probably better than most I had in London.
Kirribilli Village Cafe - Sydney

A very popular Italian restaurant/cafe i this part of town. It's right on the main walk, just off the north side of the Harbour Bridge, and a good people-atching spot if you're outside or at the windows.
It's packed fairly tight inside, though their mirrored walls make it look twice as big. Expect a bump from a server or other patron.
Meals there have been good - seafood pasta for me, mostly - but not amazing. And it's not cheap. Still trying to figure out if it's value for money.
The menu's big, though, and the special board interesting. Go for the buzz, variety, and location.

It's not the fanciest massage place, but they're very relaxed and welcoming. If you want lush surroundings, or exotic uniforms, this isn't for you. It's not a spa. They're not super-professional, but they're nice.
They do have three curtain-drawn massage areas for regular Thai massage ($55/hr), and two rooms for oil massage ($90/hr).
To be clear: this is not an erotic massage place, although you might at first mistake it for such. But they have loyalty cards and aromatherapy and certificates on the wall. It's just no-frills.
If you have an oil massage they have showers you can use before and after.
Excelsior Hotel - Sydney

Pretty good local pub and band venue.
The front's a smallish, busy, boisterous pub, with happy hipsters swilling schooners of beer. Certainly not relaxed, but cool.
There's a small room at the back where they have live music just about every night. Most are small, local bands. I saw a triple bill, with headliners Captain Kickarse & the Awesomes, for ten bucks. If you want to see a random Australian garage band in a dingy room with 40 other people - and I most certainly do - then get thee to the Excelsior. Great fun.
Bar Cleveland - Sydney

Stopped in on a Friday night before heading somewhere else for a gig. It seemed nice enough. The crowd was mixed and relaxed, there were both beer and wine drinkers, and barstools existed happily alongside soft sofas and loungey chairs. It was quite dark and atmospheric, which I like: I hate over-lit bars at night.
There was a pool room with a couple of pokies in back, quite separate from the rest of the bar, though you go through it on your way to the toilet.
I only spent an hour or so, and fairly early in the evening, killing time, but it was a perfectly chilled place to do so.
Paddy's Makets - Sydney

A very Asian-style market, hundreds of stalls in a large ground-floor area beneath the Market City mall. It's crowded, noisy, lots of places selling the same thing. They have what my father-in-law always describes as "everything from baby shit to a clap of thunder".
There's a lot of touristy clothes and hats and pins and junk here. If you're a tourist and there are kids or other folk back home who love something tacky with a koala on it, you're unlikely to get it cheaper than here.
Food, especially produce, is here in abundance. Whatever you buy, stock up on fruit and veg and you'll be pleased with your bargain for the week.
Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre - Sydney

Allez remplir votre guarde-robe!
