Leon - Knightsbridge

136 Brompton Road, South Kensington, London SW3 1HY

02.01.2008

I get the feeling Leon hasn’t been around for very long - but god love 'em, they’re trying hard. And what a great idea, healthy fast food that actually tastes like something and isn’t completely repellent. I had their humus and flatbread which were ample and excellent and VERY reasonably priced.

The seating is a mixed bag of cafe tables, couches, and benches. We managed to snag a couple of arm chairs around a cafe table which was very comfortable. The staff were enthusiastic and hard working and obviously took pride in what they were doing.

I hope they expand their menu soon as I’ll definitely be back.

Magic Wok Restaurant - Bayswater

100 Queensway, Bayswater, London W2 3RR

For some reason, I'm obsessed with crispy duck. I said DUCK. Sheesh. Anyway, near where I live there have got to be 10 Chinese restaurants featuring crispy duck within walking distance. I happened to come across the Magic Wok by accident after the first choice restaurant was too full.

I ordered the aromatic duck which comes with the skin and meat separate, with the former being served on a bed of prawn crackers. You get ample pancakes, and all the accouterments to go with it. It was absolutely delicious - not too rich or gamy.

Service was curt but efficient and professional and the locals seem to enjoy the place - always a good sign.

I'll be going back.

Mexicali - Notting Hill

147 Notting Hl Gate, London W11 3LF

31.12.2007

Ever since I moved to London from California I've been looking for some solid Mexican food. Mexicali just happens to be about 500 yards from my office so I thought I'd give it a shot.

The menu looked encouraging, if maybe trying a little too hard. No mention of "texmex" anywhere, thank God. Burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, they were all there.

As soon as I was seated the waitress brought me an entire pitcher of ice water. Bravo! That in itself is worth a star.

I ordered the Burrito Mojado which arrived promptly and was well presented. A little too well presented for "authentic" Mexican food, but hey the proof is in the pudding....and this pudding, er, burrito was excellent.

I learned later that the kitchen staff were Mexican, the owner was from San Diego and I chatted with a member of staff from Salt Lake City. All the right ingredients for good Mexican.

The only thing preventing me from giving this place 5 stars is I've only tried one dish, and I was the only person in the restaurant for lunch so I can't comment on service.

But I'll definitely be going back.

BushGirl you are often the only person in the restuarant - have you considered it might be something to do with you?

The Commander - Bayswater

47 Hereford Road, Paddington, London W2 5AH

This is exactly how I like my pubs - quiet, comfortable, uncrowded. Nice atmosphere and very easy to relax here. It's tucked away down a side road in bayswater and we found it almost by accident. A well kept secret, I would say. I can definitely see myself coming here a lot.

Ask Restaurants - Bayswater

Whiteley's Shopping Centre Queensway, London W2 4SB

It's always a little worrying when you go into an "italian" restaurant and they look at you funny when you ask for a Pelligrino. But, they sorted it out and the service was quick, the food was as average but ample as I expected it to be, and I was in and out of there in less than 15 minutes. Yeah, there was only 4 other people in the restaurant but I was treated attentively and I got my money's worth.

Average food, good service, good prices. Duly noted.

Rodizio Rico - Bayswater

Rump steak, sir? Chicken breast wrapped in bacon? Grilled lamb? Coronary bypass? Wonderful.

This place, as we say in the US, is off the hook. Meat on a sword, served at your table. Screw the salad bar at the beginning, that's for wusses, this place is for all you unabashed carnivores out there. I'm pretty sure I saw a guy sobbing in the corner going "please....no more......ok just one more slice."

Fantastic.

Maharani Restaurant - Clapham

117-119 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7TB

13.12.2007

I don't know how I feel about this place. As the other reviewers have noted, they sure like to promote themselves with all the newspaper articles in the window. I went at 9:30pm on a Wednesday and it was pretty packed - always a good sign. I was seated promptly by the pretty indifferent staff and then promptly forgotten about for 20 minutes. I eventually ordered the Chicken Korma which is the yardstick by which all Indian restaurants are measured. When it eventually came I did a double-take because it was served in what looked like a dog bowl. Not exactly appetizing. The food didn't look great either, there was something about the color that reminded me of school chicken stew. It tasted reasonable but nothing to write home about.

But when I settled up, everything changed. The waiter helped me on with my coat, tucked in my chair, walked me to the front door, held it open and wished me a pleasant evening. WTF?

Plum Bar & Grill - West Kensington

380 Kensington High Street, London W14 8NL

10.12.2007

"Hey boss, that guy ordered the ribeye steak but we've run out of it!"
"Hmmmmm.....just grill my shoe....that's technically made of cow."

That's pretty much the only way I could have been served the steak I was given. Man this place was disappointing. I sat in their bar area looking at a menu for a full 20 minutes before walking up to the waiter and being told that the restaurant was on the other side of the bar. No one even asked me what I wanted to do drink.

The menu tries way too hard and really under delivers. As I said, my steak was tough, thin, fatty and tasteless. There was no way it was the advertised 10oz. The bread they served before was hard and tasted like it had been sprayed with weed killer.

The decor was nice enough and I'm sure the atmosphere would be good...if I wasn't the only person in a place that could easily seat 200.

There were only two redeeming features. The sweet waitress who seemed too nice to be working here; and they serve Diet Coke in a glass bottle.

If you're staying in the Hilton Olympia, venture out for dinner, I guarantee you'll do better.

Andrew Hunter ahhhhh, british food :)

Upper Crust - Paddington

Span 3 Paddington Station, London W2 4PX

10.12.2007

Every time I get off a plane from the US, the first thing I want is an Upper Crust ham and cheese baguette. If that's not an endorsement, I don't know what is.

I have no idea what the appeal of this place is, I'm just addicted to it. The sandwiches are fresh and just the right size, it's fast, pretty cheap and conveniently located. As soon as I pass through a train station, I'm there.

The staff are usually pretty friendly and fast. You can find an Upper Crust in pretty much any train station which makes it great for grab and go food.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen - Earls Court

163 Earls Ct Road, Earls Court, London SW5 9RF

05.12.2007

Looking for a burger the size of a small child? Then Gourmet Burger Kitchen is the place to go. I originally hail from the US, a land known for its overindulgence and I was soundly defeated by the burger I had here. What's great about GBK is the variety of fixin's available for your burger. The standard lettuce, onions, pickles, etc but every different type of cheese, mushrooms, sauces, etc. They do good work here and the fries were top notch.
