Asda Superstores - Glasgow

Unit 1-3 Bearsden Shopping Centre, Milngavie Road, Bearsden, Glasgow, Scotland G61 2TX

30.01.2009

This is a fairly ok branch of Asda. The prices are good, the service is ok and the shop is massive. I don’t know why though, but I always seem to lose the will to live as soon as I walk through the door. It just seems to take forever to get round. On the plus side, they sell just about every food stuff you could possibly want, and their smart price range is extremely good value. They always seem to be doing things for charity, which is a good sign of their corporate kindness I suppose. Apart from that, they have cash machines, a photo lab, passport photo booth and extensive cheese and alcohol sections. I think Asda is pretty good, but it is a supermarket, afterall, and therefore by rights is quite a boring place to be.

Cafe Cherubini - Glasgow

360 Great Western Road, Glasgow, Scotland G4 9HT

30.01.2009

This is a really nice cafe run by a lovely lady and her husband. It has an Italian theme and the menu is full of the typical pastas, salads and delicious ciabatta sandwiches. These sandwiches are definitley the highlight of this place (apart from the coffee and cakes). They are just the right amount of crispy versus light and the fillings are lovely. The Italian sausage is probably the best I have tasted it is so flavoursome. You can also buy some to take away, from their small deli which also has other types of ham and salami. Most of their food can also be bought to take away as well. They have a quite good range of cakes which are very nice, and the coffee and hot choc is great. They have a few tables outside which is nice as it’s south facing and they get the sun all day. I would definitely recommend this friendly cafe.

The Cave - Glasgow

421-423 Gt Western Rd, Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland G4 9JA

30.01.2009

This is a really good little fancy off licence. They do all manner of alcoholic drinks whcih you may or may not have tried, but they are always very happy to give you advice on what you might like, or give suggestions as to what drink would suit certain foods. My highlights from this shop have been a very delicious cherry beer and a very equally lovely strawberry one too. They have a high quality range of fizzy wines, going up to really very expensive, but being in the heart of the west end, there is no doubt a demand for that sort of thing. They have a little fridge with delicious little yummy types of muchy food and a whole load of 'boutique’ snacks and nuts. They also do a nice looking beer with tequila in it, but it has always been out of stock when I have tried to track it down. I would definitely recommend this place for a special occasion, but maybe a bit too pricey for the everyday binge drinker!

The Fish Stop - Glasgow

9 Baljaffray Shopping Centre, Grampian Way, Bearsden, Glasgow, Scotland G61 4RN

30.01.2009

This is a really good and delicious Fish and chip shop. The guy who runs it seems quite passionate about the quality of his fish and chips, as he batch fries everything to order, meaning you do have to wait for it to be ready, but the taste is ultimately better as it hasn’t been sitting under the heat light for ages. They do a good range of different suppers, plus a kids menu with lovely chicken nuggets made out of fresh chicken breast. They also do all the usual drinks and mussels and ketchup etc. This is a good shop overall, and the wait isn’t a big issue, but I wish they would put more salt and vinegar on the chips as they are can be quite tasteless, despite being delightfully light.

Malmaison Brasserie - Glasgow

278 West George Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 4LL

30.01.2009

I love this verging-on-fancy restaurant. The quality of the food is fantastic, and though it is quite pricey, it is definitely worth it. They do a mean G+T and they have an extensive and quality wine list. As it is attatched to the hotel you often get lone guests dining by themself which means that it is often quiet, especially mid week, and earlier in the evening. The times that I have been there, the food has been to the highest standard, with fresh and seasonal ingredients and cooked really nicely. It is the way that the portions don’t look massive, but by the time you have finished, you feel satisfied because it has been so tasty. The staff are attentive but not overly so, and the atmoshpere is kind of relaxed and discreet. You can get private dining rooms for groups or if you just want privacy! I would say this place is fantastic, and in a good location as the parking always seems quite easy up there.

Mothercare - Glasgow

868 Crow Road, Glasgow, Scotland G13 1HU

30.01.2009

This is a great one stop shop for all your baby, toddler and child needs. They do a great range of clothes and toys (they often have sales) plus they have a Clarks and Early Learning Centre concessions and a photography bit though I have never been in there. They do gift vouchers and if anything is not in stock you can order it from their very extensive catalogue and they will deliver it to you free of charge. They do lots of buggies and kids bedroom furniture which you are free to try out at will. They also have a good range of pregnancy clothes, as well as the more embarassing stuff like boob pads and maternity towels. I would definitely recommend this place as the staf are also great. The only thing I would say is that the shop is often fairly messy and shambolic, but it never seems to be busy, so if you have the time to search, or speak to someone to search for you, you should be fine.

Greggs - Glasgow

6 Douglas Street, Milngavie, Glasgow, Scotland G62 6PB

30.01.2009

This is a nice enough branch of Greggs the bakers, and actually for a change it is not the contents which are so glorious (though of course they are), but the surroundings which are rather picturesque. This one is set in Milngavie town centre, a charming little pedestrianised zone at the start of the West Highland Way (a walk going way up North). So that means that you can either stuf yourself at the start for loads of energy, or stuff yourself at the end to replenish! As always, the highlights of a trip to Greggs include the fudge donut with yummy icing and gooey delicious innards, and I think a little steak bake is taking my fancy today. Overall I can’t fault this place, except possibly for the queue of old ladies who could potentially get in the way of a buggy.

HSBC - Glasgow

2 Buchanan Street, Glasgow, Scotland G1 3LB

30.01.2009

I am sorry to say it, but I really do not like this bank. The staff are dismissive at best, rude at worst. It is always always busy and yet they only have space for two tellers resulting in massive queues all the time (it is normal to wait for at least fifteen minutes and I find that fairly unacceptable). Bearing in mind that this was the way they designed the new branch when they moved down here a few years ago I think it’s a poor show. They charge through the nose for anything they can possible justify, no matter how tenuous the excuse, and if you want so speak to someone and complain, you get passed to a call centre in another country where you will be lucky if you can understand the brand of English the rep is speaking. It is also virtually impossible to get through to your branch as only a central call centre number is advertised anywhere. The parking is also a total nightmare. The only redeeming feature of this bank is that it is located opposite a Greggs.

Victoria Park - Glasgow

12 Victoria Park Drive North, Glasgow, Scotland G14 9NN

30.01.2009

This is a really good quite massive but very accessible park in the Jordanhill-Scotstoun area. It has a large pond with swans, ducks and a little island which you can get a bridge to and feed the ducks. In summer they have a burger van, candyfloss stall and place selling fishing nets and buckets etc. They are quite pricey but quite fun. The park also has the Fossil grove, a place where they discovered petrified trees millions of years old when they were building the park in the Victorian era. That was shut last time I went but might be open again now. The park has blaze pitches, tennis and basketball courts, a rugby pitch, extensive jogging routes and a great play area for kids. I would say this is one of the best parks in Glasgow, and you can spend a lovely day here, or just walk the dog!

Lidl - Springburn

St Rollox Retail Park, Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland G21 1YX

29.01.2009

This is quite a good branch of Lidl. It is conveniently located in the St Rollox Retail park near the massive Tesco’s there. It has cheap food and drink and every week they do promotions on certain things they ship in- when it’s gone, it’s gone! Recent ones have been: welding gear, DIY gear, car stuff, dressing gowns and slippers and the like. Occasionally they do really good deals on computers and cameras and that type of thing. They usually advertise this through mail drops, so keep your eyes peeled as the stuff is very good value. The good thing about this store is that because of the location there is often a lot of the higher end more expensive food and drink to be had, so although it is expensive compared with their other stuff, it is still cheaper than the nearby Tesco’s or anywhere else (I’m talking about champagne, mussels, smoked salmon, fancy coffee, that type of thing). I would definitely recommend this store, the only thing is that there are nearly always queues as they only seem to employ a skeleton staff.
