Chez Max - Brüssel

Chaussee de Waterloo 550, 1050 Bruxelles

I had lunch there following the recommendation of a friend, food critic, who was raving about the quality and the freshness of the food served there. One has to be waried about professional food critics - they often fall for the form more than the substance. But the experience was just fantastic and substantial - traditional French recipes reinvented with a great balance of freshness, lightness and simplicity. None of the old heavy French cuisine - even the Duck confit with fresh spring vegetables was as light as a (duck) feather !  The veal was superb and so were the starters - great ham , great asparagus. We decided to indulge in desserts with a moelleux au chocolat (here we can claim to have professional critic status for moelleux!) that was just perfect - and so were the warm apricots served with a meringue.  Finally they serve only wine from bio-dynamic producers - no sulfites and therefore no headaches !  Why go anwyhere else in Ixelles for lunch or dinner ?  I'll be back as soon as possible for another 5 star experience at reasonable price !

l'ivre de cuisine - Brüssel

This new small restaurant has only opened 2 weeks ago and this is already my third visit! It offers excellent bistro cuisine with generous sized portions and really good quality. I found the lunch special priced at €11 to be a great deal: today it was a duck breast cooked to perfection with excellent side vegetables and potatoes. In a previous visit I also had the special lunch: a duo of small soles with rice and vegetables, all wonderful. The chef always starts you off with a creative amuse bouche, one you would normally only find in Michelin-starred restaurants. For dinner or serious lunch, the menu varies every week. It seems that other people think the same as I do about the “Marbre de Boeuf et Foie Gras” as a to-die-for starter! The Ris de veau and the Gateau Vapeur de Cabillaud are both great main dishes that we tried. And for dessert, the Moelleux au Chocolat is squarely above average. Two bonuses: there is a great selection of organic wines from France of excellent quality – and the cheese comes from Charlie / A La Petite Vache, an outstanding cheesemonger in St Josse in Bruxelles. Overall, very consistent high quality, moderately priced French cuisine in a casual atmosphere. A must go.
