Edinburgh Larder Bistro - Edinburgh

1 a Alva Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 4PH

21.07.2012

The Edinburgh Larder Bistro is brand new (open one month). It has some kinks to work out; we waited at the door with no one to help us for a long time and eventually tracked down a host, and it is a bit hidden on Alva street, hopefully they will get enough foot traffic. However, the food and wine menu does not need tampering!

The meat and produce was seasonal Scottish and the preparation was absolutely delicious. It was a bit difficult to eat around dairy and gluten allergies, but hopefully the next season's menu will be more favorable to common concerns like that. Also, if you dont have those concerns, then there are many, many appealing things to choose from!

We ordered, due to allergies, all starters: The Fennel and Chicory Salad, The Lamb with Minted Hummus, Wood Pigeon, Smoked Salmon and side salad. All were excellently prepared and the flavours stood out from other restaurants. Even the simple side salad was superb-would love it as a larger dinner portion.

The restaurant itself is very small and well laid out, as it was warm, well lit (read: not dark, cozy, and I could read the menu without aid) and intimate feeling. We sat in the conservatory, which was somewhat brighter than the main dining room. It was probably one of my favorite dining spaces in Edinburgh so far: comfortable, modern, clean lines, and still very warm and inviting.

Even with the allergies I will be going back to the Edinburgh Larder Bistro, and I would recommend it to others

Love Candy - Edinburgh

LOTS of slection.

A bit annoyed, because I’m not much of a candy consumer but needed to find peppermint candy canes. I found them here (hurrah) but they didnt taste like peppermint! (disgusting).

The Grain Store - Edinburgh

30 Victoria Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2JW

Definitely worth the visit, The Grain Store was a delicious meal.

The food was seasonal which is always a great experience and it was inventively prepared. We had light and fresh oysters, scallops with caviar, halibut with garlic puree, and partridge.

The interior was very cozy and enjoyable.

The one downside was that the service was certainly lacking. Granted, despite trying to time our reservation around the seating of a large party, we somehow managed to still make it EXACTLY when they decided to sit. Still, the service team seemed completely overwhelmed at balancing the table the had with this party. They still were friendly but utterly confused.

I’d still go back, but I probably wouldnt take someone I particularly wanted to impress.

Certainly the best Thai food I’ve had. Complicated and fresh flavours. A wider selection than usual and very good vegetarian options.

A bit pricey but the portions are on the large side as well. Service was fast efficient and very attentive- the best I’ve had in Edinburgh that wasn’t at a location two to three times this price range ( and better than many of those).

I’ve seen it get very busy, usually depending on if there is a show at the Lyceum across the street, but have always had luck getting a table on a weekday night.

This is a higher end sushi establishment
But well worth the price, as the food is fresh as well made and the service polite and on point (even with a language barrier)! It’s well appreciated and dinner seats can be hard to come by so attempt reservation or lunch. I had tajo kimuchi, Kani maki, sake maki, toro tataki nigiri, ikura nigiri, and each was absolutely exceptional. Do be prepared to experiment because they don’t carry all of the staples ( for example, no waksme salad), but you won’t regret it!

This furniture charity shop is pretty large and considerably well priced. Things are dated but in good condition.

A small shop that stocks wines from every major region and a wide variety of veers as well as some whiskies etc. It tends to focus on smaller producers and does weekly tastings. A chat with the proprietor left me with the impression that this is a good place to come ready for suggestions, exploration, and discovery.

I think this is the first one star I’ve given, but this place deserves it.

The first warning sign was when we walked in and the server had to rouse the chef who was napping in the dinning room.

Anyway, the boquerones were clearly the canned salty fillets you can buy at any sainsbury’s, the pate was obviously scooped out of a tin an cut into wedges then served with some mealy iceberg lettuce, and the paella… was unspeakably bad. It had been sitting in a huge batch in the kitchen allowing it to get soggy and over cooking the prawns and mussels. Then it was heaped onto the plate, dinner-lady style. It tasted like cold, cheap pizza.

And the real kicker? I cost JUST as much as the other amazing meals I had in Barcelona.

Hopefully this place will either close, or the chef will take some cooking lessons because it is atrocious to submit customers to this.

Absolutely. Divine.

I would recommend this place to anyone I knew was coming to Barcelona. The service is prompt, polite, and friendly ( even with stuttering Spanish). And much more than that the food is fantastic, well-made, generous portions and cheap prices.

Let me put it this way: my fiancé and i went out on night to place that was so bad we felt obliged to go to MariscCo to get the arroz negro in order to wipe the former paella’s taste from our mouths.

Oh, the interior and restrooms are pretty cool too, but I recommend sitting outside to watch the placa reial if you can.

The food wasn’t really good here, a bit drab; definitely under salted and built for mild tastes. It would be ideal if you are the kind of diner who thinks ketchup is overly spicy. The service was also lack luster, although the manager is a very funny and attentive man. Still, I need better food to tempt me to face unwelcoming staff. It could have been worse, but it could be a WHOLE lot better.
