The fact that this restaurant has an enviable view of the Danube and the Buda waterfront (surprisingly, a rarity for restaurants in Budapest) and its location close to the tourist mecca of Vaci Utca might well have put us off eating here, but it was packed and lively, and we soon discovered why. Service is prompt, friendly and efficient, the menu long and varied, and the prices reasonable ( 2 mains and a bottle of wine for about 10,000fts) All the Greek specialities you’d expect are there, plus a good selection of salads and vegetarian dishes. The decor is pure Greece too, all whitewash, blue tablecloths and shiny tiles. We missed out on a terrace table, having arrived just too late, but a reservation ensured this for us when we returned only two days later. Give it a try; you won’t regret it!

For us, easily the best Coffeehouse in Budapest, and the one we returned to time and again during two recent trips. It’s a lovely building, recently restored. There are papers to read, helpful waiters in long aprons, good cakes, snacks and light meals. At night, there may be a piano playing on the mezzanine. But the prices are much fairer than the better-known Gerbeaud and the coffee just as good.
