    Bromptons Opticians

    1pxt gry am 17.01.2008

I wouldn't say that my experience with opticians reaches far and wide and so don't really have a frame of reference, but I'll give Bromptons Opticians five stars anyway.

It's impossible not to be impressed by their service. They're just great - so friendly and professional and forthcoming and helpful, really incredible. They always call me half an hour before my appointment to remind me, which is good, because I'm the kind of person who'd forget.

They're reasonably priced compared to other opticians (so my optician friend tells me). Also, being an independent, family-run business they are not forced to use particular brands of e.g. contact lenses, which is common for the big branches. That means they really will get you what is best for you.

    Pineapple Dance Studios

    1pxt gry am 09.01.2008

I don’t know how this idea came into my head but once it did it took root immediately: I want to be a breakdancer! So last week, as soon as classes started again for the new year, I showed up at Pineapple Dance Studios. I was ten minutes early but as I stepped into the assigned room there were already a handful of people there, all breakdancing away and doing the wildest of moves, spinning on their head and what not. I was feeling somewhat intimidated to say the least, but I also thought to myself, wow, I want to be one of those people!

Three classes later, aside from being in a lot of pain and almost unable to walk, I am as enthusiastic as ever and full of praise both for Pineapple Dance Studios and the Foundations Cru who run the classes. Breakdancing is so much fun you wouldn’t believe it! And it’ll make you incredibly fit, with abs and arm muscles to die for. It’s difficult and challenging and the teachers push you really hard, but that means that if you’re really dedicated you can learn a lot in a short space of time.

Another great thing about these classes is that really experienced breakdancers show up too to practise, so you get to see a lot of excellent breaking.

    Breakdancing=AWESOME. Fact.

I agree, the Goose is a really cool pub. It's rather stylish and classy with a neat clean lay-out, high ceilings and wooden floors, but still really chilled out. It's a bit pricey, but alright.

The upstairs section can be rented for private parties. I went to such a private party here recently, and it worked really well. Even higher ceilings up here, and spacious too, with space even for a bit of boogie at the back. Recommended.

Mmmm, wine... Most of the time I don't really consider myself much of a wine-buff, but every so often I'll have a nice bottle of wine, and then I'll inevitable wonder why I guzzle so much crap the rest of the time.

Good wine needn't cost much, and also doesn't require huge effort on your part. Majestic is the proof of this. They only do quality wine, and although of course you may end up buying something you don't like, it'll never be atrocious. If you have any idea of what kinds of wines you like, staff are more than happy to help you pick something you'll like.

Majestic gives you really good prices. Ok, ahem, this is because you have to buy a whole case of wine, but I promise you it'll be worth it. You don't need to buy a case of the same wine, just pick and choose so that you end up with 12 bottles. In this way, you can get really good wine for around 5-6 pounds, sometimes even cheaper if it's a special deal. Cases of wine is the way forward!

    Abbeville Road Sub Post Office

    1pxt gry am 09.01.2008

Ok, this is a post office, not much more to say about it.

I seem to spend a lot of money in here sending faxes here and there - it's not any cheaper than your regular internet/fax service joint, but it's close to my house and reliable.

The post office shares the space with a newsagent which does all the usuals - good selection of mags and newspapers - in addition they will take passport photos for you here for a fiver. Pretty handy.

Once you get past the smell of urine and faeces that meets you as you enter downstairs, it's actually a pretty cool place. I agree with Andrew that the downstairs area is a bit ropey and can sometimes have a somewhat unpleasant atmosphere. But on the whole it tends to be populated by a lively, vivacious and up-for-it crowd which makes for a good start to any evening if you have further plans for later on.

Too bad they only serve lagers. Also when the lady behind the bar gave me sambucas instead of tequilas she refused to admit that she had made a mistake and got a bit grumpy.

I'll give it four stars for fun place to drink and getting-into-party-mood, but maybe only three overall.

This Indian restaurant does curries to die for for very cheap, with prices for a main course starting at something like 4.50 (possibly less for vegetarian courses). It's become something of a tradition for me and a group of friends to come down here for a meal on a Friday night before we hit the town. Although this place is in big demand (you might have to queue for a bit) we've never had a problem getting a table for a big group of people, and I've always found service fast and efficient.

It tends to get a bit loud and lively here, so it's better suited for a group of friends than a romantic dinner for two.

I'd say it serves the best curry south of the river!

Babalou is just the good old Bugbar, a veritable Brixton institution, in disguise. On weeknights it's usually a pretty low-key and civilised bar, with people lounging relaxedly on the comfy sofas and chatting over a bottle of wine. There's usually something going on here, it's a staple comedy venue for Brixton and I've seen some good amateur music performances here.

But there's more to Babalou than meets the tired mid-week eye. Babalou is also great for those big party nights, and the vault-like low ceilings and many pillars give it an intimate feel, though it can fit a lot of people. I had a great night here on NYE, but like other venues in the suburbia it takes a bit longer than in central London for it really to take off.

This is a great little pub. It is surprisingly spacious yet feels intimate and cosy, with low ceilings and plenty of nooks and crannies. And a fire place! I don’t eat here often but from my experience so far it's pretty good. Importantly, they have a few ales here, including Timothy Taylor. Maybe a tad pricey but we’re in the midst of Clapham bourgeoisie-land after all.

The abbeville is great in the summer; there are plenty of chairs and tables crowding the pavement which gives it almost a continental feel. Thankfully, sitting outside here is very peaceful: although the occasional lorry can be seen cautiously making it's way down Abbeville road, prams are the most common vehicle to encounter here.

All in all, I could have done a lot worse for my local.

What a charming little place! If you are in need of a good bottle of wine, definitely come here. The mostly French staff (complete with heavy French accents, oh yes) are knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful (and attractive!). Most of their wines are a bit upmarket, of course, but you can find wine to under a tenner here, and it'll probably be very good. They also have a more than decent selection of whisky.
