Bradleys Spanish Bar - Fitzrovia
42 Hanway Street, Fitzrovia, London W1T 1UT
18.03.2008
A fantastic little bar on two floors. Tucked in a little alley just off Oxford Street. This bar is no frills but ticks all the boxes for character and great beer. Deco is over the top and piled on all over the place. Bar staff are edgy and very friendly which is what counts in my books.
Also the worst toilets in the whole of the UK. No one minds though and it’s always a character feature and speaking point.
The duke box is the best too.
The Guinea Grill - Mayfair
30 Bruton Place, Mayfair, London W1J 6NL
03.08.2007
Tucked away in a side street in Mayfair, behind Stella McCartney's shop on Bruton Street, is the renowned Young’s Guinea pub. It’s a bit of a Mayfair favourite with local office workers and the occasional American visitor drinking and dining. It’s had its fair share of well know actors and even Prince Charles has poured a pint of bitter. See the toilets for autographs (I’ve not been to the ladies but I’m assuming they’re in there too).
It’s not the cheapest place to drink in town so if you’re on a budget it’s not the best (about £4.00 for a pint). A round will cost you dearly.
What you really have to come here for is the food. It is definitely above average and better than any pub food in the area. The Guinea steak and kidney pie has won awards, and deservedly so. The meat is first class and the herb crust is to die for.
The restaurant in the back is the place to go for fantastic char-grilled steaks and classic mixed grills. Not the best place to be if you are vegetarian, although there are choices.
The Grapes - Mayfair
16 Shepherd Market, Mayfair, London W1J 7QQ
03.08.2007
Nice dark atmospheric pub in the heart of Mayfair’s Shepherds Market, well known for its history as London’s centre for prostitution in victorian times. Shepherd’s Market offers a different type of relief these days as a secluded part of Mayfair full of boutique shops and quality restaurants.
The pub has recently gone through a refurbishment, although has kept all the character from its past. High ceilings, cosy little drinking corners, dark wood panelled walls and quite a few stuffed animals and angry looking trouts in glass cases.
There’s a good selection of drinks available. The best time to go is during a good summers day, where people gravitate outside making it feel like a trendy village of sorts. It’s also one of the only places in Mayfair to open its door on the weekend.
It can get very busy here so the staff can seem a little unfriendly as they get rushed off their feet!
A good cosy winter drink indoors or a vibrant summer drinking hole. It’s one of those places that you’ll either love or hate.
Mildred's - Soho

Great location, nice atmosphere, too much salt!
This restaurant/cafe is in a great central location to meet a friend and have a quick and cheap veggie bite to eat. I thought the staff were friendly enough but lacked charm.
I was a little dissapointed in the food as it was overpoweringly salty and the flavours were competing to heavily with each other.
dmj1962 I’ve had the same problems at Mildred’s - and that was several years ago. Disappointing to hear the food still doesn’t come up to scratch - not a good advert for vegetarianism.

Shampers Wine Bar (1990) - Soho
4 Kingly Street, Soho, London W1B 5PE

Champers, just behind Canarby Street is a great little place to eat and drink in the centre. It's been a regular haunt for three years now and I've never been dissapointed.
The restaurant is always very lively and as it's small, it gives it an intimate feel, but not claustraphobic. There is a downstairs, but I've always prefered the atmosphere upstairs, so book ahead and ask for a table above rather than below. Decor is cosy and traditional with hundreds of paintings on the wall.
You can't really go wrong with the food and I do recommend either the oysters or the chilli squid for starters. Wine is fantastic here and be prepared to look through a thorough menu of it.
Sabor Restaurant - Islington
108 Essex Road, Hoxton, London N1 8LX
22.07.2007
If you go out in Islington and want to get away from the well troden track of Upper Street to find a true taste of Latin America, make sure you go into Sabor, five minutes up Essex Road.
It's the ideal place to meet a group of friends, as the decor (especially colourful and original paper mache animal heads on the wall) and atmosphere is light and comfortable and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The food is nuevo latino, so mixes alot of influences from South America, Africa and southern Europe to create some unique flavours. Try the Conejo en Salsa de Chocolate-
rabbit cook in a rich and spicy chocolate sauce served with wild rice, corn & quinoa salad. Yum. There's a good mix on the menu, so you can go for either light or heavier tasting options.
Take your appetite and your friends and you won't be dissapointed.
Freud Bar Cafe & Gallery - Soho
198 Shaftesbury Avenue, Covent Garden, London WC2H 8JL
27.06.2007
One of the best kept secrets in London (for cocktails). Absolutely amazing cocktails, and not badly priced considering they're served in almost pint sized glasses...
The staff are friendly, and really know what they're doing. You have a board above the bar with every imaginable choice and they will make your drink of choice if it's not up there.
Music is worldly and upbeat and artwork is hung on the walls. Interior decor is like some raw funky basement bar from Cuba.
Definitely worth a visit!
