Forestry Commission - Rugeley

Birches Valley, Rugeley, Staffordshire WS15 2UQ

21.03.2011

i love taking my little ones here, there is a fab walk around the trees which incorporates a secret fairy forest with doors and stairways carved into the trees, sculptural pieces around and about including the hare and the tortoise, a dragonfly, the three bears chairs amongst many more all ok to explore and cilmb. there is an exercise trail, story corner, and just the simple use of your imagination to take an adventure through the trees.
on top of this there is a very large park area with wooden climbing frames, swings, play house, assault course etc etc.
during december there is an area transformed into the xmas tree sales with shapes and sizes of all varieties available, a small shop area with some local crafts available and a santas grotto.
it's a very popular venue for cylcists, there is a cafe and picnic facilties dotted around, there are toilets, obviously, but they can get quite mucky sometimes depending on the weather with all the mud being trapsed around.
the only downside is the parking charges, you can either pay for an hour or a day! i find that an hour is never quite enough and i am rushing back to the car x

ye olde windmill - Cannock

windmill lane, gentleshaw, Cannock, Staffordshire WS15 4NF

21.03.2011

a old family favourite, for many years my parents have aquainted this place so far back as i can remember, it holds fond memeries of walks out across gentleshaw common going for lunch at The Windmill then for the long walk home. I could never say a bad a word, I think as all places doo it has flurrys and dips but through the years it has always been a firm favourite, good pub food, seperate bar, lounge and 1st floor restaurant, bowls out on the green, outdoor play equipment for the little ones and regular games of bowls.n

MACCA02 On Saturday 26th April we attended at the Olde Windmill Restaurant in Gentleshaw, for a family meal. As we were a large party of 20 people, we had pre-booked the table for 6.30pm. Included in our party were number of young children so accordingly we were expecting an early night.

On arrival we left with out being able to order for nearly one hour, when eventually our order was taken we were abruptly told that there would be a further one hour delay, that meant we were not going to eat until nearly 8.30pm.

When our food finally arrived, three of our party had ordered steak with a pepper sauce. Two of these were tasted and the sauce was clearly off, the third one was alright. This was brought to the attention of the serving staff who informed us that the sauce was OK it was just our taste buds not being used to special sauces. Very strange when two of the sauces tasted vile yet the third was perfect.

The affected steaks were taken away to be replaced, some ten minutes later they were returned, not new ones but the same steaks that had been washed off and then re-heated, making the potential bacteria this would cause a most unwelcome guest at the table.

When one of these steaks was returned, we had further difficulty with the staff. Of the other meals the half chickens were totally dry and had a very strange flavour and again these were not eaten.

As we had requested separate bills most of our table paid up and left without any further orders vowing they would never return again.

I went to the bar to pay my section of the bill, I overheard another table with same complaints and again the staff telling them that it was their taste buds, obliviously the standard response.

I explained that I was totally unsatisfied with the way we had been treated and felt that some discount would be a sensible course of action for the restaurant to take. I was then informed by the Assistant Manager that we must pay for all meals he would not charge for the sauces even though there was nothing wrong with them.

I then stated that I felt I should withhold the amount of £15.00 from the bill, the response to this was that he would telephone the Police as it was Theft and have me arrested. I am sure your surprised when I say I did not leave a tip.

The footnote to this evening is that five of our party have had stomach cramps and sickness over the last few days, does this relate to the above, well when consider this was the only meal at which we were all present I thinks the odds are in favour.

katy helps well it's awful you had such a bad experience, but i can't realte to it as we can only write what we know i guess! hope you r next gathering is more successful.

Chasewater Light Railway - Chasetown

Station Approach, Burntwood, Staffordshire WS7 3PG

21.03.2011

this makes a lovely trip out for all, the heritage railway is very well run & maintained completely by volunteers usually on saturday and sundays and some weekday specials during school holidays and over xmas etc. there is the chasewater visitor centre, an independantly run water sports centre - currently out of operation i think due to the fact they have drained the lake temporarily - an outdoor park, mini golf, wooden climbing equipment, a small stone built castle overlooking the lake, a stone beach, a wooden bridge and a path to alk around the whole place which is approxiamatley 4 miles ideal for walking or cycling, chasewater is also notorious for bird watchers.
ideal for a short trip out or to make more of a day of it.

Monkey Forest - Trentham

Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire ST4 8AY

21.03.2011

just visited here last week for my little ones 2nd birthday, we have been a few times before and always had a fab time.
the walk around the monkeys itself is lovely, a nice smooth path leads you round a little mini adventure, there are snippits of information on the way round about the monkeys and guides at various points to advise and answer any questions. outside of the main forested monkey area there is a cafe and outdoor picnic area as well as a wood chipped park area and across hte way an older park area, toilet facilities are decent and there is a small educational hut. it's right next to the main trentham estate/ gardens/ shopping/ garden centre so you coul dmake a real day of it if you wanted to.

Drayton Manor Theme Park - Tamworth

great day out for all, thomas land is fab for the young ones and you can onthe rides too, the zoo, entertainments, adult rides, lake etc the list goes on.
its advisable to pack a picnic as always food and drink etc is pricey especially if there is a group or family going.
the best way of paying for it as well is through the tesco clubcard deals it's a fraction of the price, especially if it's a day out to Thomas Land who wants to pay full price adlult entry to meet the fat controller......they also do special xmas events etc definitlet worth the trip x

Moor Hall Hotel - Sutton Coldfield

Moor Hall Drive, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands B75 6LN

21.03.2011

my husband surprised me with an overnight stay here for my brithday, it is a beautiful hotel set in beautiful grounds, we have previously been for a meal in the restaurant also but this was the first time I had stayed. The bar and restaurant service was impeccable, of a standard second none as was the food and drink, we were never made to feel out of our league for a second which is fantastic as somewhere like this feels as if it is for other people who can afford to indulge in such a lifestyle much more often than once in a blue moon for a special treat! The breakfast selection and service again was excellent and frankly I was ready to settle in for another night. There are also day spa facilities which I am looking forward to experiencing on a girly weekend at some point.

very friendly and welcoming whether eating in or out, food is always delighful, never a bad meal although eating in always seems nicer.
doesn't look much from the outside and would benefit from and internal facelift but really that isn't the be all and end all for a good local eatery.
