The Big Banger - Little Heath

377 Old Church Road, Little Heath, Coventry, West Midlands CV6 7DT

13.05.2013

Popped in to this quaint corner cafe today. Had their club sandwich (bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato) for £2.75. Nice service, good food, reasonable price. The breakfasts look good and they even do a full Irish (3 x bacon, 3 x sausage, 2 x eggs, fried bread, tomatoes, beans, 2 x bread & butter including tea or coffee - added fried spuds and white pudding £6.00 ) along with the English! Not too much choice for lunches, but do burgers and pannini's (meatballs, hangover special, sausage savoury etc. £3.00).

Will use again - worth a try.

Tumbledown Farm - Cannock

Four Crosses Lane, Cannock, Staffordshire WS11 1RU

Nice carvery with good choice of veg but the chef must have given me the worst cuts of the joint as it was quite tough and such a small portion too. I would go back again though to see if its better next time.

Seafish Restaurant - Ripley

68 Cromford Road, Ripley, Derbyshire DE5 3FP

14.02.2013

This is more than a first class corner chippy - its also a licenced restaurant with full waitress service, serving very good quality fish and chips, plus other food too.

I came across this by accident on my travels a couple of months ago and just had a quick takeaway of fish and chips which was excellent. I noticed the large busy restaurant on the side and decided to try a proper lunch when I got the chance.

So, last week I popped in and what a lovely meal I had. Good quality, large haddock with great chips and mushy peas with tartare sauce - all cooked to perfection. As its licenced, I also had half of amstel lager and a soda water as thirsty - £10.03. More than I would usually pay for a quick lunch but this is a top quality place and I'd promised myself this treat. The place itself is very new looking (see photo's and their own website) and was nearly full with diners. I will have to visit again and urge anyone passing Ripley on the A38 who needs a food break to give this place a try whether for a quick takeaway or proper sit down meal. Its only 10 mins from Derby and its main roadside stopover McDonalds - so I will never feel the need to stop there again.
Full range of starters from £2.50, main courses are around £6 - £9, desserts around £3. Give it a go guys.

Oadby Owl - Oadby

Popped into here on my travels as I could not find a carvery to go to. I chose a chicken dish off the larger portions menu - the waitress saw my quizzical expression - very small portion. This is microwave, portion controlled food and not very good either. A couple of real ales on offer - but as working did not try. I was disappointed and as I visit this area regularly I will make a point of not returning. Main patrons were single mothers with kids - I think it was kids eat free night!

Chalkys Cafe - Ibstock

13 Chapel Street, Ibstock, Leicestershire LE67 6HF

07.02.2013

So glad to discover this place on my travels. Not just for bacon butties, very good food to eat in too. Been twice now - had pork steak dinner last time and yesterday had chicken casserole - both excellent quality and flavour with very friendly quick service. Lots of choice for hot and cold food with lunches at £4.25 - they do a mega mixed grill brekkie for £7.50! Even I would not finish this! Well worth a vist.

The Red Lion - Market Drayton

Great place with own brewery - the ales are very good and you have a choice of dark, bitter and blonde. Larger than it looks from the outside. We ate at the back (xmas do) and the food was good.

Good Taste Chinese Cuisine Takeaway - Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton Road, Birches Bridge Shopping Centre, Wolverhampton, West Midlands WV8 1PE

12.12.2012

Popped into here for first time the other evening coming home from work. Extensive menu - usual chinese takeaway fare on menu.  Starters from £2.20 - mains from £5.40. I went for an old favourite - special curry with fried rice (£6.30) and chips + £1.50 (ok - I was very hungry - get over it!). I asked for it a bit extra hot. This was the best chinese meal I've eaten in a long time!!! I will be back - have to try their other dishes too.
Also available are the set menu's from £21.00 - Oh and no delivery - collect only but well worth a try.

The Newbridge Inn - Newbridge

Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton, West Midlands WV6 0LE

Fancy a great carvery with choice of 3 meats and as much veg as you can get on your plate for just £3.50? Then this is your kind of place. The £3.50 price is Mon-Sat up tp 5.00pm, its £4.50 after that and about £6.50 on Sundays. This is part of the Crown Carvery chain of carvery pubs.

There is a choice of lagers and smooth pour but just one real ale (Marstons Pedigree – served too cold!). I use this place quite often – its cheaper than buying a sandwich and packet of crisps! The choice of meat is always the same – turkey, beef or gammon, I wish they would use pork or lamb occasionally though. You help yourself to vegetables – as much as you like. There are vegetarian options available and a lovely range of pud’s – if you can squeeze one in after the large carvery. Oh and of course there are other meals available such as salads.

A great value place to eat – especially afternoons.

UPDATE – Nov 12. Popped in last weekend and the prices are now different to above. £4.19 for standard carvery and you can “go large” for extra £1.50. But the “chef” carving was so unwelcoming and so ungenorous with the meat that one of our party complained to the manager. It was the first time there for 2 of the party and they said they would not return. I will give it another go as its local and hope it’s a better chef – certainly had more generous portions recently at other crown carveries since the price hike.

Have had much better welcome and service from recently from several other Crown places (Loughborough, Studeley, Leicester) – all of which were very good for the money.

Barley Mow - Studley

Priory Square, Studley, Warwickshire B80 7BA

22.11.2012

Popped in for lunch whilst in area. Nice welcome and good service. Food good too. Nice, comfortable pub with real ale too. Well worth a visit. Part of the Crown Carvery chain. £4.19 for standard carvery.

Big Johns - West Bromwich

1B Dudley Street, West Bromwich, West Midlands B70 9AJ

11.10.2012

Not as clean and with the good service I received from the Big Johns I visited in Leicester. Same menu's and value but as other people have said - not very friendly. Lots of debris on tables but no excuses as not at all busy. The peri peri chicken (£2.99) was cooked well and still moist but chips just ok. Have to pay extra £1.50 for salad.
