Your mileage from the word "bargain" my vary (the bottled ales are far from it) but very handy when the supermarkets have shut and have a good wide range of other stuff

I call it the Flying Chair. Every time I've been in there's been a fight (no, it wasn't me!) as it's currently a favourite for the particularly youthful type of drinkers who can't handle a few pints without getting a rage on.

The beer is Thwaites.

In essence, bring a hard hat and a hard stomach. It's ok for a change of scene on night out, just be ready to find a good safe corner!

Not generally my first choice for pizzas or kebabs in Ulverston, but the calzones they do are pretty good in my opinion if you fancy a change.

A very good selection of ales, very well kept; nice atmosphere; no/minimal use of the TV for sport (good); no food (good when you just want a pint); dogs welcome (not relevant to me but some may wish to know); beer festivals at least once a year which are always brilliant and have a huge selection of ales; friendly staff.

Currently a favourite.. sometimes you have to filter out the "music" (current manager is clearly a big rock fan) - not always - but between the Stan (great but full of people eating) and Devonshire (now a sports bar, albeit one that still serves ale) I'd say it clinches the top of Ulverston for fans of a relatively peaceful pub with real ales.

I have never, ever had a bad ale here. I've known many very good real ale pubs and it's inevitable that sometimes you get a bad one yet it's never happened to me so far. Brilliant. There tends to be a selection of at least 8, with types to suit every ale drinker.

The food is also absolutely excellent. Do bear in mind though that it's a very popular place for food so if you're just out for an ale around tea time it will be packed out with foodies so I'd recommend the Devonshire or Swan. If you do want food though it's good filling, rustic yet great quality, good value stuff and comes recommended.

4 stars for not opening earlier!! (around 6.30 from memory but do check).

Brilliant quality, yes it's expensive (so not for those on a tough budget) but you get what you pay for and will find some great local food in there. It also has the best selection of bottled ales in town, by far, and at much better prices than "Bargain" Booze in most cases.

Like a Chinese takeaway should be - you get enough in one portion to share 2 ways (more than plenty to share 2 portions 3 ways), the prices aren't bad and the staff very friendly, and there's a good real ale pub next door while you wait.
