Laura Ashley - Sunbury-on-Thames
Unit 2b Sunbury Cross Centre, Staines Road West, Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey TW16 7BB
22.12.2008
I was really pleased to see Laura Ashley open up in Sunbury Cross. The units in this small development have been difficult to let in the past but with the arrival of Marks and Spencer as an anchor store a few more have dared to open.Sunbury Cross is not the sort of area you expect to sustain a Laura Ashley shop but this one is used as a clearance store and has more than it’s share of clearance furniture .Many pieces seem to be badly damaged but I have purchased a decent sofa and a large wardrobe from here at roughly half price. You can pay to have it delivered but it was cheaper for me to get a local man and van .There is a selection of the usual niknaks in the store along with fabric ,lighting and bedding which is usually full price.

For children up to about the age of 8 or 9, this place is heaven.Living only half an hour away it was a staple in our list of places to go. It was a favourite for those half day afternoons at the end of term when several mums headed off with kids in tow to spend a few hours reading or chatting with a coffee whilst the children disappeared into multi coloured tunnels and ball pits never to be seen again.Rounding them up at the end of the afternoon was always a game in itself. I found that the heat and the noise could be blocked out after a bit and it was great for my son to be so energetically absorbed for so long.I always felt the supervision to be minimal but there was at least always someone at the top of the slide keeping an eye on things.
For about a fiver ,it always seemed very good value.
Elgiva Theatre - Chesham
ST. Marys Way, Chesham, Buckinghamshire HP5 1HR

We are not really pantomime afficionados and don’t normally go , preferring to spend our theatre money on something a little more 'worthy’ in the West End. The last pantomime we saw was in Woking, Peter Pan starring the chap who plays 'PHil Mitchell ’ in Eastenders as Captain Hook.He was too short for the role and I couldn’t get his alter ego out of my mind. This year however, I won 4 tickets for 'Snow White ’ at the Elgiva and we ventured out again into the land of makebelieve and double entendres! You can’t fault the theatre. It is a very easy place to get to and the seating is great with views of everything from everywhere. The production though was dire. How disappointing to find the dwarves played by children who don’t speak at all. The mirror on the wall was simply strange and the lines spoken by someone who had absolutely no idea how to act.His resemblance to a young Liberace didn’t help.A good performance by 'Muddles’ the comic hero couldn’t outweigh the terribly un charismatic and wooden Snow White. Very disappointing all round.
The fish and chip shop - Waterside

You must get your fish and chips here. I am salivating at the thought just writing about them.A chance remark by my neighbour put me on to this Fish and Chip shop.It isn’t very local for us but it is well worth getting in the car for , even when it is pouring down. They don’t let you order your fish until you reach the till which means you might have a few minutes to wait if you order haddock or plaice. We ordered haddock on our first visit and it was so delicious that we have never ordered anything else. Creatures of habit I admit but believe me it is GOOD!The portions are generous and always have enough chips in one portion for two of us and we always manage to save enough fish for our two cats who are very vocal when they smell it.I think the 'Hings’ must be local celebrities because there are newspaper cuttings on the wall proclaiming the quality of their food . I assume that the lady and gentleman who are always working there together are My and Mrs Hing. Mr Hing doesn’t speak to the customers but is busy frying.
Make a trip and see for yourself.Highly recommended.
Historic Church Street - Chesham

Church Street in Chesham used to be the commercial hub of the town.It contained grocers stores and workshops up until the beginning of the 19th century when these buidings began to be converted to the cottages and yards we see today. They are very quaint and from the pictures I’ve seen in the estate agents windows, pretty small. There are two good pubs in this area and some pretty allotment gardens.St Mary’s Parish church dates back to the 12th century in parts and is well worth a look. The Bury, a grand house in beautiful gardens is nowadays home to a business but last Summer we went to a production there of 'The Witches’ done by 'The Chesham players’ and we got to sit in the gardens, eat cookies and admire the lovely grounds.
Kempton Thursday market - Sunbury-on-Thames

Every Thursday near Kempton Park racecourse you will find the traffic queuing along the Staines Road east as shoppers mix with travellers trying to get out to Sunbury Cross. From about 8am till 3ish you will find market stalls galore ranging from the fruit and veg and flowers at the entrance to luggage ,shoes ,wrapping paper ,meat ,undies and perfume. There are several stalls selling Argos or Next catalogue returns and a few selling electrical items at cut prices. Add to this the obligatory mobile phone unlocking guys and the short date food stalls and you will have a good idea of what’s there. Pre Christmas it always used to have a fab stall selling perfume gift sets but this was missing on the last few occasions I have been.Worth a trip just for a look .Parking is abundant but it gets very busy near Christmas time.

A private boarding and day school for boys and girls.FRom first hand experience I knoiw that it is a really caring environment for boarders and a jam packed curriculum and social life.Very impressed with the variety and level of activities offered and lovely staff too.Fabulous grounds by the river and walkable to Cambridge town centre.I have a young relative at 'The Leys’. She is not used to the UK and had not studied all of the appropriate work to start A level but she has settled in so well and has rapidly caught up with her peers.Obviously that’s due to a lot of hard work on her part but also I think to the sensitive treatment and sensibilities of the staff, particularly the house mistresses.Recommended.
The Barber shop - Chesham

My son has had some atrocious haircuts over the years but 'The Barber shop’ gives a very quick and a good haircut .We have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be served. My son usually has the same lady to cut his hair and she remembers him and the quirks of his hair, which is helpful. It costs £9 for a haircut for a child up to 12 years old.
Well, I spoke too soon as we went today and it was so full that we were turned away.It seems that Tuesdays, they close at 5 rather than 6 .We will try again tomorrow. It is actually called 'The Broadway Barber ’ which I had forgotten.Broadway because that’s where it is,right on the broadway in Chesham. It is worth trying if you have had your hair cut elsewhere in the town and not been satisfied.

I have tried to buy things in Zavvi but there has always been a reason why I didn’t. I tried to buy things from them online but the registration process refused to let me in!! The webhelp people just said try again another time. (So I bought the game from elsewhere.) As there is a Virgin mobile store within this Zavvi shop in High Wycombe and the assistants never seem to be busy I find that as young men, more often than not they know more about the other products stocked in the shop than some of the Zavvi staff. I had agreat explanation of an online gaming product from one of them. So ,still no purchase as they more or less talked me out of it.Unfortunately for them exactly the sort of product you can buy online without getting soaked or paying exhorbitant car park charges. Long live Gamestracker.

Everyone knows what a Pizza Express is like don’t they? I am a big fan of their Tuna and Mushroom pizza .It is what I dream about when I’m on a diet! We didn’t know this branch.Well the food in the Cambridge Pizza express was just like every other but I want to write about the particularly helpful waitress we had. I was with a party of children ,fussy, noisy and needing the toilet at different times throughout the meal and we were probably a waitress’s worst nightmare .I don’t know your name I’m afraid but thankyou for being great with the kids, changing the food ,picking up food and generally doing what a first class waitress should do. A rarity!Thankyou again.
