O'Hara's - Darmstadt
Frankfurter Landstr. 45, 64291 Darmstadt
28.01.2009
O’Hara’s is fine if you want somewhere to pop in for a drink, the service is nice and friendly, but I cannot in all conscience recommend the food. I’ve eaten here a couple of times (I’m a very forgiving soul) but it’s never been good. Generally everything is drenched in salad dressing (even their Tacos) and the side salad is “changeable” the most recent consisted of iceberg lettuce with quartered tomatoes. Still - if you’re a smoker they do have a fully enclosed smokers’ section - no having to stand out in the freezing cold here.
Centre Commercial Cité Europe - Coquelles
1001 Boulevard Kent, 62231 Coquelles

The only thing worth going here for (IMHO) is Carrefour. I’ve checked it out several times and it’s pretty much what you’d find in any shopping centre - H&M - Zara - Etam - Toys R Us even a Tescos wine store. There are a few French boutiques, gift shops and shoe shops, but generally they are average to over priced, especially the electrical store Darty. I can only suppose that they pay a premium in rent that they have to pass on.
If you’re gasping for a pint there is an English pub in the food court, which is a bizarre faux French street cafe affair (see photo).
If you do go, make sure you make a careful note of where you’ve parked and which entrance you use (it’s easy to get turned around).
Hôtel Ibis - Coquelles
Avenue Charles de Gaulle, 62231 Coquelles
12.01.2009
This is a typical Ibis, that’s convenient for both the Eurotunnel and the Cité Europe shopping centre.
Comfortable bed, clean rooms with those funny cubical showers, straight out of the space station.
The last time we stayed the rooms had been given a lick of paint and new bedding, which gave it a much fresher look.
There’s a nice bar, but the restaurant is a bit hit and miss. Hit - gammon steak / Miss - any of the pasta (I was tempted to ask the chef how he got it to all stick together). Oh and don’t be fooled by any offers of steak (it’s that faux steak that the French love and the rest of the world uses to sole their shoes). One poor lady sent hers back, but the clue is in the price - it isn’t going to be prime Angus for that.
There was free WiFi too, which is new, but I can’t say how long it will last. Just ask at the reception for a WiFi key, which is valid for 24 hours.

12.01.2009
This is a good old honest patisserie. The counter is at the front of the shop, on the street side, but just walk through or round the back to find the cafe. Good coffee and lovely croissant and pain au chocolat, and a good choice of breads and cakes. There’s a huge car park round the back too.
Every time we travel through Calais we come here instead of having the hotel breakfast. They open at 6.30 am, and they’re right next to the beach, so the pups get a good walk too. The only downside is they’re shut on Sundays.

I’ve never bothered to rate a takeaway for being good before, because generally, unless they are very bad, they’re much of a muchness, but I feel obliged to rate these guys, because their food was excellent. Everything was cooked to perfection and you could tell the ingredients were as fresh as fresh can be.
I shared a vegetarian platter (there was enough for three of us) and had the Malia Chicken Tikka as my main course, which was very mild, but tasty. It’s a shame I’ve left Nottingham, because I doubt I’ll find another take away as good as this where I’m going!
They lose one point because they don’t deliver.
Primrose House - Nottingham

We stayed here just before returning to Germany for the New Year. It was very comfy and cosy (eventually) and the dogs were no problem. Generally I found it good value for money, not cheap, but with a nice comfy four poster bed (which Ninja found very comfy - see photo), tea and coffee on hand, and its own parking it was not bad. Unfortunately it lost half a star for not having the heating on before we arrived (it was brass monkey weather) and another half for not getting into the corners and behind the fittings with the hoover (something I’ve noticed happening more and more in Britain) people do look you know!
It was great fun to watch the chickens and the big fat turkey strut his stuff in the garden (he survived Xmas I hope he had the same luck with New Year).
The breakfast was very generous. Thick cut bacon with delicious butcher style sausages and not a baked bean in sight. The only downside was the ever changing bread, from a bakery style loaf (yummy) to a Warburtons sliced (yucky), it was never the same from day to day.
Rosemary's - Nottingham
6 Lincoln Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 3DJ
29.12.2008
I have to say I was a bit disappointed with Rosemary’s. They have a good selection, and their own brand herbal remedies seem to be well priced, but any branded goods are just plain over priced. I almost bought their 'own brand’ cod liver oil, until I read the label (always read the label) and saw that even though it’s labelled “pure” it contained 'various fish body oil extracts’. That is not what I call pure.
Fat Face Clothing - Nottingham
4-6 St. Peters Gate, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 2JG
29.12.2008
I just went here for the first time today at the recommendation of (see above). It was great. A super selection of casual clothes that you know you’ll be able to wear next year too. Really nice lay out, and friendly service. My only complaint is that their labels are lethal (heavy cardboard that split my lip when I tried to try on a scarf of all things). So be careful.
It isn’t Primark, but there were some good 50% off bargains to be had in the sale. If you’ve got the money and you like well made and nicely finished clothing that will last, then pop in.
