Jasmine Thai Restaurant - Exeter
153 Fore Street, Exeter, Devon EX4 3AT

Jasmine is far more than your average high-street Thai restaurant. For a start, their meat is carefully and ethically sourced, which indicates a high level of care and attention to the quality of the food. Secondly, the service is genuinely among the best I’ve experienced in the UK – friendly, attentive, informative and helpful (for example, they asked if we wanted a whole steamed fish or whether we’d like the chef to prepare just a fillet).
Of course this would all be for nothing if the food wasn’t really, really good... which it is! Flavours are amazingly fresh (I’ve eaten at enough just-OK places, where the food is pleasantly sweet and salty but not much more, to really notice a difference here), and the meat in my lamb curry was soft and tender. The coconut rice actually tasted of coconut (often you can just detect a hint). Prices are reasonable, particularly when compared with prices and quality at other comparable restaurants nearby.
Oh, and the thing that really marked it out as a winner from the start: they give you a basket of *both kinds* of prawn crackers – the spicy crunchy kind as well as the normal white kind – so you don’t even have to choose between them. Awesome. I can’t recommend this place highly enough and would love to come back to try more of their dishes.

Yeah, yeah, I know you're meant to go to the Mission for the ultimate burrito. But Casa Mexicana is 5 mins from my house, and has never let me down as my default lunch burrito place.
Lots of choice of meat - I usually go for the steak but the marinated pork (achiote?) is damn good too; all your usual burrito choices plus quesadillas, "specials", breakfast burritos etc etc. Fantastic. They also have a salsa bar to load up on with your free chips.
In short, I love this place.
Bi-Rite Creamery - San Francisco

Just wanted to rep for the Coffee Toffee ice cream, beats even the Salted Caramel if you ask me! The coffee ice cream is perfect, not overly sweet, but the buttery blasts of toffee in there give you the sugar fix.
The best place for ice cream in SF that I've tried so far...
Might be slightly pricey for the tubs, but I reckon the scoops are good value. You'll fill up your loyalty card in no time...

I've eaten here quite a few times and the food is on the better side of your usual Thai restaurant experience - lots of flavours and a big selection of dishes. Sadly although service is usually pretty good one evening we had really bad service. I think this was down to one waitress though (bringing a dish no-one had ordered, repeating the name of the dish and then stomping away before we could ask if there'd been a mistake). Don't let this put you off though as they are usually friendly!
You can also order take-away (to pick up) which is fantastic if you just want above-average takeaway while watching a dvd.

Great place to pick up lots of cheap cleaning supplies, kids’ party stuff, sweets, hair products - pretty much anything. If you venture downstairs there is a pretty good selection of home stuff - paint & wallpaper, furnishings like bed linen, towels, curtains, cushions, lighting, crockery, loo seats - most of it pretty decent and inexpensive.
Definitely worth a look in if you’re doing some DIY, decking out a new kitchen or bathroom, or just need some lightbulbs.

I just love coming here - they sell nearly everything for the home including bathrooms, kitchens, flooring, DIY stuff, tools, tiles, appliances, gadgets, furnishings, furniture… you can wander around for hours and the staff are pretty helpful.
Dulux Decorator Centre - Bristol

I didn’t know about this place (despite the massive sign on Stokes Croft) until my flat needed decorating… now I couldn’t be without it!
They will mix up in minutes any shade of paint from their range of thousands, at reasonable prices. They also have a wide range of wallpaper including posho designer stuff as well as a range of DIY gear (although some of this can be found cheaper elsewhere). They offered me a 10% discount card which has been well used and you also get Nectar points on your purchases.
My only complaint is that as there are so many colours available they don’t have the full range of samples on the display - you might need to ask to see swatches if you want a specific shade. Oh, and if you buy a sample tin for around £3/4 the price will be refunded when you buy the full tin.

Decent enough place to grab a bite to eat during the day, too - the menu is Greek-ish but with paninis and Pieminister pies too, and the specials are worth a look at. Food is reasonably priced and atmosphere easy-going during the day.

This shop sells a range of more unusual shoes - Rocket Dog, Red or Dead, Fly, DMs, plus many others. Prices are comparable to other shops but you might find a pair you haven’t found anywhere else!
