Minting Park Farm - Gautby

Horncastle, Lincolnshire LN8 5JP

05.02.2013

Award winning Lincolnshire sausages anyone? Don't mind if I do. Super tasty top and silverside of beef? Oh go on then. Best steak you've ever had in your life? Why the hell not?

If you can get over this way within the rather limited opening times, or arrange a visit directly, then definitely do.

From their website:

Minting Park Farm is a family run mixed farm of approximately 600 acres, situated in the centre of Lincolnshire to the south side of the ancient Limewoods.

We have a suckler cow herd and a flock of sheep, and grow wheat, barley, beans and grass which feed our stock. After converting buildings, we have a butchers shop/cutting area, chill store and freezer room, from which we market our wonderfully tasty beef lamb and mutton.

A recent addition to our range is a small group of
Pedigree Lop pigs. One of Britain's most endangered rare breeds , as well as our own Free-Range chickens. All meat is hung on the bone in our chill store to properly mature and give optimum flavour and tenderness.

Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie - Kreuzberg

Friedrichstrasse 43-45, Kreuzberg , 10969 Berlin

29.01.2013

Jam packed with real life accounts of people whose lives were impacted by the wall, this museum is definitely worth spending a couple of hours in (if only to get your money's worth as it's on the steeper end of the scale).

Bit cramped, and you can't take photos, so it isn't on my list of favourite museums in Berlin, but it's still one to see.

DDR Museum - Mitte

Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 1, direkt an der Spree, gegenüber dem Berliner Dom, 10178 Berlin

29.01.2013

Hands down one of the best museums I've ever been to. A friend of mine takes her students to Berlin each year and had never heard of it - a complete travesty and one they're going to fix on the next trip, as this is definitely not one to miss.

Totally engaging and interactive, the DDR Museum is full to the brim with information, pictures, activities, films and exhibits. And it's so cheap!

Don't leave Berlin until you've been here!

Brandenburger Tor - Mitte

Pariser Platz, 10117 Berlin

29.01.2013

As you come up the steps from the U-Bahn and see this in front of you you'll find yourself taking a deep breath and maybe having a bit of a tear in your eye. Having seen the Tor in so many films, books and pictures, it's more than a little bit amazing to see it in real life.

The Italian Caffe - Glasgow

92 Albion St, Merchant City, Glasgow, Scotland G1 1NY

29.01.2013

A group of us went to the Italian Caffe by accident as we thought we’d booked a table at the Italian Kitchen, but we’d managed to get them mixed up on the website - oops.

The small plate/tapas style dishes work really well and the 3-dish set menu is good value, but the tables are too small to fit everything on so our waiter suggested picking one dish as a ‘starter’ then the other two as mains which was a bit clunky. Having said that, it all tasted good. The fishcakes with spinach and vermouth sauce were the best I’ve ever had.

Top tip - when you book, a) make sure you get the right place, and b) ask them for the largest table they have. Even if there’s just two of you.

Bath Street Palomino - Glasgow

207 Bath Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 4HZ

29.01.2013

We came here for cocktails and two out of three of them were delicious – the Mari Pippins and one that had strawberries and pepper in. The one with prosecco, mint and limoncello though, not so much. Not just ‘ooh I don’t like this one’, but ‘something has gone very wrong here’. In fact, it tasted like soap.

Things we liked included the really wide widescreen screen (I’m not sure how else to describe it), the resin filler in the wooden tables, the matt grey paint, the ‘wobby wood’ decorations and the Scandinavian/sauna feel of the bit at the back.

Things we weren’t sure about included the red light effect in the window booths that smacked of a particular area of Amsterdam and the soapy cocktail.

The Tea Rooms - Glasgow

151 Bath Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 4SN

29.01.2013

Although in hindsight we should have probably booked a table for afternoon tea, we were really well looked after and had drinks in the bar downstairs until a table was ready, at which point an exceptionally lovely lady came down to fetch us.

My sisters and I had the prosecco afternoon tea and there was so much cake we had to take some home with us. We fell in love with the mismatched china and furniture and with the delicately pickled cucumber slices.

The perfect way to spend a relaxed yet oh-so-civilised afternoon.

Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery - Friedrichshain

Mühlenstrasse, Berlin

02.12.2012

You can't come to Berlin and not visit the East Side Gallery. A tangible piece of history that you can reach out and touch, with some fantastically poignant and well presented art. For free!

Stasi Museum - Lichtenberg

Ruschestraße 103, Haus 22, 10365 Berlin

02.12.2012

If you're intrigued about the SED and its MfS then this is definitely the place to come. Fans of The Lives of Others will be happy to pay the 5 Euro entrance fee simply to be on a film location (I was!), and those who want to learn a bit more about the Stasi, its history and ultimate demise will find it fascinating to go through the rooms and seeing the different exhibits in situ. I don't understand the negative comment below about it being 'inaccessible'!

azova - Mitte

ackerstr.144, 10115 Berlin

02.12.2012

I love Azova! I spent a good twenty minutes mooching around Mitte trying to find somewhere I could hole up with a book and a glass of wine and this was the only place I found that fit the bill. Soli is a fantastic host - super friendly and very good at making you feel welcome. Top of my list of places to revisit when I come back to Berlin : )
