Jerk Hut - Walthamstow

257 Hoe St, Walthamstow, London E17 9PT

21.08.2012 (aktualisiert am 11.09.2012)

After months of intending to visit, my first experience of Jerk Hut was rather an unplanned one. I stopped off to get a takeaway on my way back home - not for me but my other half. It was 9 in the evening. I ordered a quarter of jerk chicken (mild) with rice and peas (other alternatives included plain rice or chips - typical English) and coleslaw. I asked for a side of plaintain which they had run out of (here we go...). I also asked for a side of macaroni which they had. For myself - I wasn't very hungry but felt like I had to sample their chicken so I ordered a quarter of jerk chicken (hot) by itself. My other half said the chicken was good (but not as good as another eatery down the road who shall not be named on here so as not to make my review biased) and macaroni cheese tasty but a bit dry. This is after he initially tucked into my chicken and said it was "HOT". "that's mine!" I exclaimed. Anyway as I said I wasn't that hungry so I took my chicken and some of the OH's rice and peas to work the next day and it was "HOT" and tasty. Just how I like it. Still, I'm not fussy but have definitely had better. Perhaps I need to eat in?

jerk_hut Thanks for your review.

I am sorry about the plantain, we hadn’t run out of plantain just merely took it off the menu in the morning as it wasn’t up to our standard, however we did get some plantain by 3pm that Sunday. I have just spoken to the waitress who was on duty that day and see was not aware that it had been changed.

As a guesture of good will we would like to offer you a some free plantain on your next visit.

In regards to the mac cheese, it is the first we have had that comment, however were always able to change or get a refund if you were not entirely happy with the food.

I am glad you enjoyed your chicken. Perhaps you believe you have had better chicken, our chicken is freshly jerked the authentic way all day long. However everyone has their own opinion.

The main thing you enjoyed it, as your took to work for seconds.

Hope to see you soon.

thank you

princessjasmine Hello and thanks for your response. It’s great to see you would have offered a refund/change on the mac and cheese but as this was a takeaway and I live in Wanstead, it was a little too far to drive back to change at which point my food would have been cold.

As mentioned – I think perhaps my experience would have differed had I eaten in and so I would love to come back to visit soon, eating in – and at which point would love to sample some of your plantain.

I have to love Leon, particularly the Old Compton Street branch. It’s colourful, entertaining and a great place to have breakfast (yes!). I tried their egg poached cups a couple of weeks ago and if you’re ever around Soho at 8.30 in the morning looking for somewhere to grab breakfast you can’t go wrong. Check out some pics and full details here http://foodieclaire.wordpress.com/2012/04/12/poached-egg-...

I came here last Friday with my friend and her mum. She’s lucky enough to live right next door. Lovely decor, great service, Friday night saw us being entertained by a jazz singer and guitarist. It was pleasant enough. We opted for three courses for £35. It was nice but I wasn’t blown away. Seafood cocktail, nice. Thai Green monkfish curry. Swimming in veg and served in a cast iron dish. Very very hot. Sauce quite watery. I was worried about splash back. Chen’s sirloin steak looked nice. Dessert was lovely. I had a chocolate fondant. Very rich. Chen had sorbet and mum etonmess. Cocktails were good (although i can’t remember what we had – not that memorable). £44 for three courses and a cocktail (included) plus a glass of prosecco. Not bad but won’t write home.

Smack my wrists as I attended a burrito masterclass on Valentine’s Day (what a beautiful day to be making burrito’s) with my other half courtesy of Qype. We had so much fun, lots of margaritas and came away stuffed. I did write up a full review with photo’s here – I hope you enjoy. Thanks again to T and the team. Can’t wait to go back for lunch (I feel a Tortilla Thursday coming on!)

I visited Cabana last weekend to try out their combo’s – an addition to their mouth-watering menu. I found the food fantastic and the caipirinha’s more-ish. I’ve posted a full review with photo’s here http://foodieclaire.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/taster-event...

Supperclub - Amsterdam

As part of a hen weekend festivity my friends and I visited the supper club at the weekend (Saturday night). The original plan was meant to be a supper club cruise but due to the adverse snow conditions (canals frozen!) we had to quickly make a plan B. We still visited the supper club but it was at the actual club venue. Now that I think back – when we arrived I completely forgot that a cruise had been our initial plan, because everything flowed so perfectly. I should now tell you that if you are not mildly attractive, you’d feel very out of place here! Sorry! We arrived practically thinking – wearing UGGS, with heels in our handbags to be greeted by what can only be described as a historical Greek God. It was like a scene from 300. We were escorted to our table – which was essentially one long bed with mini tables for your drinks. Shoes had to be removed anyway! It was a good thing none of us were wearing short dresses/tightless as our dignity would have been revealed for all.
Our waiters were absolutely stunning. Very accommodating, cool and complete flirts. One of our waiters appeared to have a sock fetish!
Onto food – we started off with a glass of prosecco which was part of our booked meal package. The rest of the courses were as follows: baked chicken on a skewer stick with a baked fig and mango sorbet aperitif. (We were offered gloves to eat the chicken so we wouldn’t have messy hands which I thought was a nice touch). Mushroom soup in a glass topped with parsley. Fish (haddock I think) cooked gently and served on top of a risotto with a bisque side. Steak with mash, and beans. Dessert was coconut ice cream with chocolate shavings and half a passion fruit.
In between courses we were treated to a performance by the most mobile, flexible, bendiest girl I’d seen since “Afrika”. It was very eclectic and Alice in Wonderland styled. A DJ spun suitable dance tracks whist we dined – there is no other way to describe the visual apart from the fact that it was very much like we were in a nightclub on beds having food served to us. “Greek God” and another young lady were constantly walking around making sure everyone was happy and generally looking after the customers.
The toilets are unisex. No scratch that – there were two toilets but they had made one unisex and labelled the other one as a smoking room. So basically you were smoking cigarettes and other goodies (yes) around urinals. No biggie but if you’re anti unisex loos you probably won’t appreciate this element. The prosecco is amazing, the food very well cooked. The wine very well chosen. This venue has been given much thought. There is an upstairs area which you can get to via very steep stairs. One might wonder how you would get up those stairs with food/drinks. This isn’t a concern. A suitably muscled man stands on top of the bar passing plates/drinks through a gap to someone on the upper floor. Genius! You have to see it to believe it. I urge you to make this a “must visit” if you go to Amsterdam.

Spaghetti House - Kentish Town

169 Fortress Road, London NW5 2HR

05.01.2012

I hadn’t been to Spaghetti House for a while, until I visited three times in the space of one month shortly before Christmas. It disheartens me that this restaurant isn’t on my doorstep as the food is so wonderful, the food is so cheap and at fantastic quality which is hard to find in our current economic times, the staff are welcoming, the clientèle friendly and regular – and if you happen to bump into the Camden Cat serenading you on a Saturday night with Elvis songs on his guitar – count yourself lucky. I reviewed Spaghetti House on my blog here:

Fantastic beauty services provided here. I was recommended via word of mouth which I believe is the best way to learn about new businesses. I have only ever gone for one service – brow threading which costs a mere £2.50 however I know they offer hair styling, facials (using brands such as Dermatologist) and more which my friend often comes for. They accept walk-ins and you can also book. They are open 7 days a week and close at 7pm in the evening weekdays. Great for post work visits for me and they are walking distance from Gants Hill Underground station or you can park outside – and then grab a bagel from across the road after :) all in all fantastic. Oh they also have a branch in Upton Park.

Beauty-Anjus Thank you for your kind comments and your custom. :)

Ships Galley - Fitzrovia

Had the most amazing lunch here today. Recommended by my two colleagues who stumbled across it whilst looking for pubs to have a company christmas lunch. Lovely chef pitched outside in a marquee cooking steak ciabattas with mustard mayonnaise and salad. Divine. The steak ciabatta’s are only available on Friday mind… Lasagne with salad is available for a mere £3.80 – so good it was sold out when we got there at 12.45. I resolved to a spinach and ricotta tortellini (one of about 5 options) and I was not disappointed. £4 and served with coleslaw and side salad. Fantastic portions, absolutely tasty. Will be back for sure.

princessjasmine Thanks, definitely a hidden gem :)

Heart and Soul Caribbean Restaurant and Wine Bar - Leyton

512 Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, London E10 7DT

I visited Heart and Soul restaurant about 3 weeks ago for a friends birthday. It was a great meal, refreshing to visit a restaurant specialising in Caribbean food so close to home – that wasn’t takeaway or a cafe.

I wrote a full review with photos here:
