I’ve had some good evenings here especially in the summer or when they’ve had beer festivals. Despite the endorsement by CAMRA I’ve had some appalling beer in here and I wouldn’t recommend it to the proper beer drinker especially when the far-superior Harcourt is so close by.

I got a slagging for that review but I’m pleased to say that the perpetrator(s) have moved on and been replaced by the wonderful Michel – French cook known to many in Oxford. The food has improved beyond measure and if you’ve not been here in a while I’d cut along to it quickly before it is “discovered”. They’ve opened up the rear of the pub and made a very cosy lounge. On both recent occasions the beer has been exceptional. I’d now put my rating up to *

Newly opened on the Cowley Rd and tried the lunch there. It was a very decent meal if a little quiet. Excellent chicken curry and different from the normal Cowley road fare. They say they’re Nepali and there are a few leanings that way. Started with steamed momos which were made in-house and not the best I’ve eaten in the UK. The spicy Nepali saag was absolutely brilliant and they said they grow it themselves.

I’m surprised this place hasn’t had more reviews. It’s an utterly brilliant little pub in a fast-improving part of Oxford. It’s run by a couple of young men and they bring a true dedication to this business. Fabulous range and quality of beers and excellent, simple food. In times when other pubs struggle and go out of business this place is thriving and deservedly so. There are a number of these types of pubs that have appeared in Oxford These places have a good clientel who enjoy the atmosphere and the banter. It’s like the re-invention of the pub with all the bad old thuggish bits taken out and the wonderful traditional bits kept in. This will be the saviour of the British pub which is otherwise under siege on all sides.

I can't believe this pub hasn't been reviewed yet. Fabulous sarnies made to order - a lunchtime treat for lots of the locals. Publican couple are just brilliant and have been at this pub for decades. I used to spend a lot of time at this place and highly recommend it. I once saw Colin Dexter in here deeply in thought probably composing his latest Inspector Morse outing.

The food's better than you might expect late on a Saturday night. It's not a bad boozer but it does get busy and full of tourists. I'm not sure about all the Tolkien ambience - I think that was edited out of this pub a long time ago. Not an Oxford beer pub.

One of the best nurseries around. The staff have a fantastic plant knowledge and are always willing to help. Just a brilliant resource for professionals looking for high-quality planting material
The Cavalier - Marston

Sadly now closed. Yet another pub in Marston gone forever probably to be reinvented as a Tesco. The last 3 months has been one of the worst ever periods for pub closures in Oxford. The once-lovely Radcliffe Arms in Jericho, the Brewery Gate and the Cavalier. I'm sure there are others.

Still an Oxford classic and the beer remains excellent unlike some of the other popular Oxford pubs in the vicinity where the beer, sadly, has become undrinkable.

I'm a fierce critic of shabby Indian food in Oxford as my reviews will tell but this place is truly a diamond. I have no hesitation in writing that this is the best Indian food in Oxford. Not a particularly attractive place but if you value food quality over flock wall paper I insist you try this restaurant. S Indian thali, iddly and dosa - can't get these anywhere else in Oxford. For nostagia's sake I had a masala omlette and I was immediately transported to the early morning train pulling into Lucknow. I look forward to working my way right through their menu.

I stopped by here expecting a cheapish, quick lunch cos I hate the pub nextdoor. It wasn't cheap or quick. The latter was difficult to understand because the place was nearly empty at the time. Lunch is always a good indicator of the evening setup and consequently I've never been back here since.
