Hawksmoor - Covent Garden
11 Langley Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JG
30.03.2011
You could give it a 4 out of 5 when you want to reserve the 5 out of 5 for the one really special experience, but when it comes to Meat - Hawksmoor is for me a 5 and I am only considering the food.
Slightly upscale (meaning a lot of suits), not cheap - the burger is not on the Restaurant Menu, but on the Bar menu, just ask for it and is fabulous. When I was there, they had a monthly burger special - this is the most cost effective option for Hawksmoor anyway.
Then there are the steaks, I had a 800g Prime Rib and it is just meat Nirvana. Accompanied by a Cabernet, Domaine Du Haut Bourg just perfect.
When you feel your heart struggling with that combination of meat and wine, have a dessert is will certainly kill you, but with a smile on your face.
The Coach Makers of Marylebone - Marylebone

A mixed experience.
Both rooms the one on the ground floor and the one on the first floor a really beautiful. On the ground floor with an exposed brick wall and windows all around towards the streets. The chandeliers and candles create a really warm atmosphere. I've been there on Wednesday evening and is was not really crowded (went there because as always Le Relais de Venise was packed).
When saying "mixed experience" then only because some things are just not fitting, so it is not a restaurant, but a Gastro Pub with a waiter - I ordered Merlot and got Sauvignon Blanc, usually I don't care, because no one is paying attention anyway, but this time stressed that in case the burger comes with onions I need to have them without as I am allergic, guess what, the bottom bun was covered in onions. I asked for Mayonnaise and after my chips were finally cold I was told there are out of it - so service, friendly, but... don't know perhaps should do something else for a living.
The burger was good and the mushroom toast that my friend had, was delicious comfort food on a cold evening like this.
3 out of 5 - definitely will come back when in the area as it is a really nice place, but probably only for a glass of wine.
La Trouvaille - Soho

I spend quite some time at this place as I really love it.
There is a restaurant upstairs which I haven't visited and a wine bar (I would say) on the ground floor. In summer you can sit outside and in the cobbled street you can easily forget that you are in Central London.
A fine slection of French wine, good small platters to accompany the wine. Nice atmosphere. Not loud, not rushed. Perfect for an afterwork chat with friends & colleagues, unfortunately with only a 30% chance of a free table.

Went there on a Saturday evening with family, reserved a while ago, the place was packed.
The best thing about the place is really the atmosphere and the decorations (see MissGood's review). We had some parties there so the place was pretty lively which made it more enjoyable for me, but not for the others who wanted to have a conversation.
I am usually asolutely against forced entertainment during dinner, but the belly dancer was absolutely gorgeous and the performance didn't last longer than 10 minutes.
The food was good, but considering a 200+ GBP bill for four the place is pretty expensive given that the dishes are rather small. A guy on the neighbouring table almost started a fight over the size of his couscous dish.
The Sherlock Holmes - Embankment
10 Northumberland Street, London WC2N 5DB
24.11.2010
I went there because I was in the area and looking for a pub using qype as recommendation. Unfortunately this time I didn't agree with the reviewers.
Looks by far better from the outside than on the inside feels rundown and the atmosphere is less than cozy the Sherlock Holmes paraphernalia didn't change that. Service is grumpier than usual.
Just had beers and then took off, so can't comment on the food.

Went there on a Saturday morning, 10:00am, by chance visiting Borough Market, spotted a free table and in.
Turned out is is really a nice place, excellent breakfast, english with a spanish touch - e.g. Chorizo instead of breakfast sausage and manchego for the scrambled eggs.
The coffe is a delight and made it in my best coffee list: Hernandez & Wells, Monmouth and Jamie's Recipease.
Service is very friendly, no rush even though the place was packed.
Fatboys Diner - Canning Town

There is no way you will find this place by chance and while you are on your way you will think - did I take the wrong turn... but once you are there, you will have the chance to visit an original old school US diner. Built 1941 in New Jersey it has this perfect flair of good old times meet decay.
The food is ok, the burger is greasy and not with too much flavour and the pie is sweet and plasticky which kind of adds to the atmosphere and atmosphere is the main reason why you wold want to visit that place.
Trinity Buoy Wharf is an interesting place directly opposite the O2/ Millenium Dome and features the only light house in London.
Good place for a grey Sunday, feels even more remote than it is.
Busaba Eathai - Soho

There is almost always a queue outside, but it moves quite quickly. Not a place to linger that's for sure. It is decide outside, be seated, eat, leave. It is loud/ noisy and you share the table with everyone who can fit there as well.
Having said that, it is consistently good food and for London really affordable. I especially enjoy the Mango Lassi with a drop of rose water in it. Everything else is good Thai food (at least from what I know).
If you like the rush and bustle, go there, but take friends with you (don't be a threesome they have to wait the longest).
Dishoom - Covent Garden

Nice place for a shopping break. I have been there three times and it seems to be consistently good.
I am not too excited about the main dishes, but as they are more a Cafe than a Restaurant that's not the point. The "tapas" style dishes are all good. I like the squid and the Samosas in particular.
Definitely get the "Thums Up" Coke - that's worth the visit in itself. Look it up on Wikipedia to find out what's it all about.
Atmosphere is lively, but not loud. The Service was everytime very friendly.
Bincho Yakitori - Soho

Went their on a Tuesday evening. Good amount of guests, not full though.
The waiters were nice, the service prompt. The atmosphere was nice, but nothing were I would like to spend the evening, rather a good place to get something to eat (if this makes sense).
The downstairs area doesn't look very appealing, but could be that this was just because it was empty.
The food is good, but as some other reviewers wrote, comes in very small sizes. I also don't like the way they price the the skewers, it shows the price per skewer and then says you have to order at least two. I see the point that you can also order three, but it would be better to show the initial (2) and then each additional.
In summary not a place to avoid, but also not something I am going to visit more regularly.
