The modern Malaysian menu at Suka means you pick a mix of grazing dishes. The staff suggested a couple each but I’d say, depending on how hungry you are, that three would be plenty for two people. The crispy chicken salad in particular was huge, with a poached egg stirred through it when it was bought to the table.
The duck in foie gras sauce was incredibly rich (nice, but rich), I loved the scallop skewers with satay sauce, and the pork belly was great too.
I wasn’t expecting as much from the dessert, but we found just about enough room to share the chocolate fondant, and all I can say is Oh My God!
So the food was lovely, but there was a down side. The restaurant was cramped and loud - not exactly what I’d expected - and the staff were so over-attentive it got annoying. I felt a bit pushed to keep on spending, particularly on drinks. I was already tipsy from drinkin champagne in our room, but they made me feel a bit cheap for only drinking diet coke and water.

Sticking two fingers up to those supermarkets that sell 'fajita chicken wraps’ at lunchtime, this is how you SHOULD eat spicy chicken (or steak, or pork, or veggies). Wrapped up with rice, beans or onion and peppers, with fresh homemade guacamole, salsa, sour cream, cheese and lettuce, all for a fiver (sounds a lot but you should see the size of the things).
Everything is fresh, yummy and put together in front of you so you can see exactly what you’re getting. I could quite happily get my lunch here and across the way at Simply Thai every single day if I didn’t think they’d judge me!

I’m always a bit cautious venturing into the city (not my crowd at all) but this is a real gem - hidden enough that it’s not packed (though I was there mid-week) with surprisingly friendly staff, reasonable prices considering the area, great decor and a good atmosphere.
The restaurant upstairs was virtually empty when we ate (about 9pm) and served up really good food. The pizzas are great (all in unusual combos that work really well - mine was chorizo and squid, yum) but the salads are also amazing. Don’t go here if you want a classic Caesar though, the one our table ordered was essentially steak and chips with a bit of lettuce; they don’t do things by halves!

Like Katie, I’m very tempted to give this a 1 and say 'it’s rubbish, don’t bother’ because I want to keep it a secret. But she shared it with me, so I should spread the love.
I’ve spent far too much time exploring this cavernous place searching for the ideal [insert current interior obsession here]. The prices are actually very reasonable and anyone with a passion for vintage homewares, antiques or just plain old good value bits and bobs for the home should definitely give it a go.
The only thing I would say is it’s a bit difficult to know who to talk to about buying things and to work out what’s for sale and what’s still being touched up because - like so many places in Crystal Palace - it’s so small and friendly that I never know who’s an employee and who’s a shopper!

Not particularly impressed with this branch. Maybe I was there on a bad day, but this one seemed far too cramped and though most of the staff were lovely, one was a bit confrontational.
Firstly, the wrong food was bought to us. When we said it wasn’t ours, the waitress snapped “oh, well I was told table number X so…” as if it was OUR fault (there are no numbers on the tables - turns out it was for the people behind us). We then proceeded to wait another 20 minutes or so.
Eventually, she came over to ask us if we’d actually ordered anything. We had to show our receipt, and then our food was finally found. Well, half of it. We had to wait longer for our chips, at which point it was clearly apparent they’d ballsed the whole thing up and were covering it up. I’d have preferred them to have just been honest about losing the order.
All that, and the food wasn’t particularly good. The satay chicken burger had far too much sauce on it (making it taste like a peanut butter sandwich with a bit of chicken in) while the chorizo burger had a measly amount of chorizo in. For the price, I’d have expected a lot more, and have come to expect it from other branches.
As I say, maybe we were just there on the wrong day?!

Friendly staff, a nice atmosphere, affordable drinks and good food…what more could you ask for really?
I’ve been here quite a few times for lunch, where you can get a meal and a drink for about £7. Considering the quality of the food, this is very good. Chips are obviously freshly cut and fried, the burgers are great and they also do a decent Sunday roast. It’s a small menu on offer, but what’s on there is done well for the price.
It’s often unusually quiet, despite the location on the busy road from Brixton to Stockwell. I’m not sure why this is, but I’m happy for it to remain a well-kept secret if it means I get a good seat every time I visit. In Summer, the garden out the back is a nice place to sit and waste a Sunday afternoon, but in Winter, you’ll find me on the sofas!

Two words for you - new chef.
Went here on Saturday for a quick bite even though I’d heard it was a bit hit and miss…only to find a tiny but very good new menu of your usual gastro pub stuff (posh burgers, pastas and some nibbly bits). Ordered the chicken burger and was very impressed to find it was proper chicken, well marinated, served on good bread. Chips were fresh, they still had the skins and had obviously been cut by hand and deep fried to order.
It only loses a star because drinks are pricey, but you pay for the decor and atmosphere as much as you do the food and drink. I love the walls covered in bookshelves, the trendy dark interiors and the fact they have a selection of board games on offer.
Also, the staff are lovely. There aren’t many places in London where you’ll be complimented on your t-shirt as you approach the bar.

Everyone has said it all already, really. There’s only one way you can make a vintage shop more appealing, and that’s to house it in a pub. Genius.
Vintage Hart is tiny, but stocked with a brilliantly edited collection of vintage clothing. It’s a nice change to go into a vintage store and not have to wade through loads of naff tracksuits and overpriced denim jackets to get to the good stuff. In here, I was oohing and ahhing over almost every item.
Add to this the very reasonable pricing (most stuff is about half what you’d pay in similar, but far more pretentious, shops in central London) and the friendly service, and you’re onto a winner.
I have a feeling I’m going to spend a lot of money here in the future.

Recently refurbished by the people behind The Rye in Peckham, the Bridge House has now got a Gastropub feel, with flock wallpaper, big squashy sofas and vintage chairs. The decor is a bit mix 'n’ match, but I get the feeling that’s entirely deliberate, and it’s definitely aimed squarely at the young, professional types who’re moving into the area (moi? Never).
Despite the fact it’s gorgeous inside, the pub also benefits hugely from a massive beer garden and terrace out the back. It’s particularly packed on sunny Sunday afternoons (beware the kids) with people enjoying the roast lunch. Saturday’s seem pretty busy too but evenings are slightly quieter.
It’s not cheap here (Two ciders and a wine came to £12) but you pay for the atmosphere as much as the booze. Food wise, the regular menu is pretty standard pub fare with some gastro trimmings (most are about a tenner). Sundays are popular for a reason; a veggie friend dubbed the veggie roast (about £11) the best she’s ever had, and the thai green curry is surprisingly good too.

For our last night in Leyton, my housemate and I decided to head back to the only pub in the area we’d ever consider our local. In a not-too-brilliant area this is a reliable old man’s boozer with a bit of a secret; the thai food is really good.
If you’re usually a wine bar and cocktail kind of person, the beer mat and glass collections and the mounted animal heads on the walls (not to mention the stuffed fox in a box) might scare you off, otherwise, it’s got quite a cosy, old-fashioned charm. Whoever looks after the hanging baskets lining the outside of the pub does a stellar job, as they seem to be blooming all year round.
In true pub style, there’s also a big screen TV (inevitably screening football / sport of some kind) and some perpetually drunk locals, but head out to the back bar where the food is served and it’s not bad at all. Drinks are cheap, the staff are friendly, and did I mention the thai food?
Yes, get the thai food. The menus might be a bit hard to find, but it’s worth it for the price.
