Spirit is one of the larger and more lively bars on Canal Street. It’s split over three floors and also has a sizeable balcony on the top floor, complete with heaters in the colder months.
Prices are pretty average for Canal Street, and there’s a decent selection of drinks on offer. The toilets are situated right at the back at the top of the stairs, which can prove something of a mission on busy nights.
It can get pretty busy at the weekends and can be very quiet during the week, so depending on what kind of night you’re after some careful timing may be required!

A light-hearted and fun bar just off Oxford Road. Pretty cheap and a decent selection of drinks.
The atmosphere is usually fairly mellow in here, though as a student bar it’s very much affected by the academic calendar as it were - expect carnage during freshers week!
It’s probably best known for it’s fishbowl cocktails, served in (you guessed it) a big fish bowl. They’re pretty good value - though if you’re sharing with a few friends it’s probably wise not to drink the last bit… as it’s probably just saliva by that point.

Baa Bar is one of the many trendy* bars along Deansgate Locks, and is one of the busiest on a Friday or Saturday night.
The decoration of the place is interesting - think Saturday Night Fever meets a padded cell.
There’s a wide selection of trademark shooters available at a pound a go (though you can splash out an extra 50p to go large). Most taste horrific, though perhaps that’s the point of them. There are a few tasty ones in there though!
They also offer a few cocktails, which have been rebranded as shootails. Not quite sure what the difference is except they don’t taste particularly alcoholic - nice and cheap though as you can buy two for £3.
Generally a decent enough bar for a couple of drinks if you don’t mind people taking themselves too seriously. Expect plentiful pouting.
*Warning: Punters may not be trendy. No guarantee can be made as to the trendiness of the WAGs that drink here. May contain nuts.

Odder is a fun little bar situated right opposite the BBC on Oxford Road. It’s got some crazy decor that may be truly inspired, or it may have been the product of a run of luck at a kitch car boot sale.
Ambience during the week is pretty relaxed with fairly unobtrusive music, making it a nice place to hang out for a chat over a pint. The drinks selection is very decent, with some lesser known brands available that don’t feature in the larger chains.
Quite a few friends have raved to me about the food in Odder, though the couple of times I have eaten there it was pretty mediocre fare. I’d suggest the quality may be a bit haphazard - either that or I need to get some more discerning friends.
Overall a nice little place that isn’t too loud, pretentious or expensive.

Obsidian is something of a hidden gem on the Manchester bar and restaurant scene. Located on Princess Street beneath the Aurora hotel, it offers a cool and sophisticated space to enjoy a meal or drink. The door staff are always incredibly friendly, which is really quite a refreshing change.
I have differing views on the bar and restaurant, so I’ll address them separately - in terms of layout, both areas are distinct so you don’t need to feel like you have to eat if you’re just looking for somewhere to chat over a beer.
The Obsidian bar is relatively small, and can probably accommodate around 50-60 people. Drinks are served by arguably the best looking bar staff in town, and they don’t just have extraordinary beauty but brains and all (well, they know how to make a great cocktail anyway). It’s a little on the expensive side, although gone is the menu of old that featured shots of whiskey for £250. Expect to pay about £6.50 for a cocktail.
The restaurant is well designed and has a very chilled out ambiance. Service is on the slow side and the staff haven’t quite polished their performance when it comes to making the experience as enjoyable as possible. The menu is a little too indulgent for my taste, but the food is decent enough. It’s expensive for what it is, and considering the nearby competition when it comes to food I don’t rate it that highly.
Whilst the restaurant has a way to go before it reaches the heights of what it could be, the bar is one of the nicest environments in Manchester to relax and unwind in, and has an upbeat atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights to get you in the party mood.

After visiting Cloud 23 my feelings on it were mixed, but overwhelmingly negative. I went there for a drink on a Thursday evening with a few friends, and after waiting in line for 15 minutes we took the lift to the bar.
The first thing that hits you on arrival is the magnificent view of Manchester - it’s breathtaking. The second thing that hits you (which are arguably more breathtaking) are the prices at the bar. Having travelled to quite a few major cities of the world, I struggle to recall prices like these outside of some of the swankiest places I’ve visited in London.
The staff are quite sultry, as I’m sure I would be if I was being paid per hour at less than is being charged for a pint of beer. I found the general ambience of the place pretty dire - it seemed to be full of drunken louts overwhelmed by the novelty factor of the bar, and people with lots of money to burn (who were not afraid to make it very visible to everyone else that it was the case).
My advice would be to go up there to enjoy the view, and then go to one of the much nicer bars or pubs around the corner (Atlas, The Knot, Dukes 92) for a drink.
I was fortunate enough to visit the bar as part of a private function, so could enjoy the view without worrying about the prices. I would object less about the prices, given the the view, were the service and the ambience top notch to match - but as you say, they aren’t.
The problem is that there is only one lift from the foyer up - leading to queues in both directions, which is not good. (Who designed it this way?).

That’s where I must have been going wrong, I need to get invited to a private function! Would certainly complain less about this place if the drinks were free :)
