If ever you find yourself in Glasgow, and you have a WEEK with nothing to do, then this is the place to spend it…...although that may well be not long enough!!!!.... I have been going here time after time over the years and never tire of the beauty and scale of the exhibits….they are awesome!!!! For those of you who enjoy this sort of thing you would imagine that you could only find this wealth of ancient history in the capital (London).....but here in the far north we also have our secret places (we try to keep it to ourselves mostly) but it is our pride that makes us run off at the mouth and let you all into our secrets!!!!!!. The added beauty of most of our places of interest, museums and the like is that they are: FREE!!!!...............yes, I did say: FREE!!!!. So, where do we make our money I hear you ask????.....well we have the best pick-pockets and muggers in the British Isles. Seriously though, we leave you with more money to spend in our pubs and restaurants and shops!!!! What is more more you are always sure of a great Northern welcome. The Burrell Collection is an art collection in the city of Glasgow, in Scotland. It is situated in Pollok Country Park on the south side of the city. When Sir William Burrell and his wife, Constance, Lady Burrell, gifted his collection of over 9,000 works of art to Glasgow, the city acquired one of the greatest collections created by one person. William Burrell had been an art collector since his teens, and the collection is made up of a vast array of works of all periods and from all over the world. You can wander round important collections of medieval art, tapestries, alabasters, stained glass and English oak furniture, European paintings, including works by Degas and Cézanne, an important collection of Islamic art, and modern sculpture including works by Epstein and Rodin. Children will be fascinated by the works from days of long ago -there is a fine collection of works from ancient China, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Architectural features from the collection have been integrated into the structure of the building -you can walk under arches built for medieval lords and ladies. There are also reconstructions of rooms from Sir William’s home, furnished in gothic style with items from the collection. In 1944, Burrell and his wife signed the Deed of Gift of their collection to the City of Glasgow. They wanted the collection to be housed in a building 16 miles from the centre of the Glasgow, to show the works of art to their greatest advantage, and also to avoid the damaging effects of air pollution. Sadly, no suitable site had been identified by Burrell’s death in 1958, but Mrs Anne Maxwell Macdonald and her family gifted Pollok House and 360 acres of Pollok Estate to the City of Glasgow in 1967. Although within the city boundaries, it was agreed that this offered a wonderful setting for the collections. The Burrell was purpose built, the result of an architectural competition, and opened in 1983. Care was taken to ensure harmony between the building and its collections, and the park it is situated in. The light and airy building, its woodland setting and the amazing breadth of Sir William Burrell’s collection make a visit to The Burrell Collection an experience not to be missed. Set in the relaxing surroundings of Pollock Park is The Burrell Collection - a wonderful, award-winning gallery of Burrell’s extensive and stunning art collection. Left as a gift, together with £250,000 for the construction of a building to house it all. This is possibly one of the best collections in Britain with everything from Chinese porcelain to paintings by Renoir and Cézanne. There is also a super restaurant for those who appreciate good food as well as good art. The park and woodland offer plenty of outdoor activities too,... either for walking or for a picnic, or see the changing seasons reflected in the trees. I guarantee that if you don’t like it…...................you will get your entrance fee back!!!!
