Ever since Spitalfields began its transformation to tourist attraction & premium retail, London's newer local designers have been emigrating east. In 2004, many of them found a new home here in Ely's Yard, in the Truman Brewery complex in Brick Lane. (up)Market, which spills out the doors and into the already ever-changing Brick Lane vendors, has all the range you've come to expect from an East End market (if you're an old regular of Spitalfields, you may even see some familiar faces), but with less oppressive traffic and often at much better value. From books to booties, I've bought all sorts of stuff here since it opened, gifts for both others and myself. Among these have been a pair of handmade makeup bags, a funky one-of-a-kind hat, a custom mac, 60s Moschino shades and bespoke elf slippers.
If nothing else, (Up)Market is a nice stop on the way between Spitalfields and Columbia Road, and with its dynamic food area with stalls for everything from sushi to empanadas to frog's legs and tartiflette (mmmmm...), you might be there longer than you'd planned.
