I won't bore anyone with more information on how JK Rowling spent time writing here, but I will point out that the place is really inexpensive. Thus it's no surprise that she would go here, pre-wealth and Potter fame! What I like most about the White Elephant is the fact that it's a very friendly and social place with amazing (stunning, even) views of Greyfriar's Cemetary and Edinburgh Castle. Located just off the Royal Mile (opposite the National Library of Scotland), it's a bit touristy in the sense that you can pick up t-shirts and mugs to commemorate your visit, but it also has a great appeal for locals who choose this place for its exotic teas, fabulous cakes (I highly recommend the flapjacks with chocolate and the elephant-shaped shortbread cookies), and gourmet coffees. The atmosphere is both inviting and warm; all are made to feel welcome. Newspapers are strewn about for your to read; internet is available for pennies; it's a great place to relax on your own or with friends. And if you happen to like elephants, than all the better. There must be hundreds all about in a variety of shapes and forms. Go for the experience; go to see the budding writers in search of inspiration; go for CAKE!
